Medical Social Worker – Inpatient/ED

About the Role
Bronson Battle Creek is hiring multiple Medical Social Workers to provide clinical social work services across inpatient units and the Emergency Department. This role supports patients across the lifespan and plays a key part in crisis intervention, care coordination, and safe discharge planning.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical and Crisis Intervention

Provide crisis assessment, de-escalation, and safety planning
-
Support cases involving mental health, suicide risk, domestic violence, sexual assault, abuse/neglect, grief, and substance use

Conduct mental health assessments and coordinate with Psychiatry Consult services
-
Facilitate psychiatric transfers and develop safe discharge plans
Care Coordination and Discharge Planning

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including nursing, physicians, PT/OT, child life, and psychiatry
-
Coordinate referrals to community agencies, outpatient services, and treatment programs
-
Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and provide clinical updates
-
Ensure safe, timely discharge planning with appropriate follow-up resources
Hospital Operations

Respond to acute care codes (trauma, stroke, AMI, Code Blue)

Cover multiple units based on acuity and patient flow
-
Partner with security, Risk, and police to support safety and reduce workplace violence
Legal and Ethical Responsibilities

Complete legal documentation for involuntary psychiatric hospitalization, guardianship, and related processes

Collaborate with hospital attorneys and testify when required
Documentation and Compliance

Document assessments and interventions in the EMR accurately and timely

Participate in policy development, quality improvement, and required education
Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Social Work required

LMSW or LLMSW in good standing with the State of Michigan (LMSW preferred)

One to two years of experience in healthcare or mental health preferred

Strong communication, crisis intervention, problem-solving, and advocacy skills
-
Ability to work in emotionally charged situations and collaborate across teams
