Job Summary:
To perform various cleaning, set-up, and tear-down tasks within assigned areas. Duties may include work in swimming pools, restrooms, locker rooms, hallways, multi-purpose arenas, offices, classrooms, special purpose rooms, conference rooms, recital halls, theaters, football stadium facilities, box offices, press boxes, concessions, and seating areas.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Clean assigned areas following established schedules and prescribed methods.
- Remove trash, sweep and/or dust mop floors, polish hard surfaces, vacuum carpets, clean windows and mirrors, dust furniture, equipment, and ledges.
- Wet mop floors, vacuum swimming pools, and clean tabletops, countertops, equipment, and chalkboards.
- Arrange and set up furniture, staging, athletic, and physical education equipment from diagrams and written or verbal instructions.
- Tear down and rearrange rooms and facilities following events and activities.
- Lock and unlock buildings and rooms, close windows, and turn off lights.
- Sweep and remove debris, leaves, snow, and ice from building entrances and walkways.
- Perform special cleaning projects, including carpet shampooing, floor stripping and waxing, wall washing, arena scrubbing, weight room floor cleaning, and pool deck maintenance.
- Maintain assigned equipment and report malfunctioning equipment.
- Load, unload, and move supplies.
Related Duties:
- Observe and report the need for repairs and replacement of equipment, furniture, and fixtures.
- Move furniture and equipment as necessary for cleaning purposes.
- Assist other custodial specialists and custodial personnel as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received:
Assignments and administrative supervision are received from the Associate Vice President and/or designee(s).
Supervision Exercised:
May be responsible for student employees assigned to them.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent may be considered.
- Valid Michigan Driver License.
- One year of custodial experience.
- Ability to effectively communicate with others and maintain good working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the University community.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team and adapt to flexible and emergency scheduling.
- Ability to apply and follow custodial safety procedures.
- Knowledge of the proper use and care of cleaning equipment and cleaning solutions/chemicals.
- Ability to follow clearly defined oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.
- Ability to pass State and Federal mandated training, licensing, and certification requirements within a reasonable period of time.
- Must pass a job-related physical examination and relevant skills test prior to appointment.
- Ability to independently identify, begin, and complete assigned tasks.
- Ability to identify and report facility and grounds maintenance needs.
Working Conditions:
- Most duties are performed indoors, though some outdoor work may be required for short periods of time.
- Exposure to dust and cleaning chemical fumes.
- Subject to noise and vibration from automatic cleaning equipment.
