$25.90 – $30.80 per hour based on the Support Staff Association Contract
Job Summary:
To operate, maintain, repair and install water distribution piping, plumbing fixtures, fire sprinklers, sanitary and irrigation systems, steam and condensate systems, and swimming pool components following recognized procedures and techniques of the trade of plumber, and provide general maintenance services.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Maintain, repair, and install water and sewer distribution systems; may include distribution and branch feeders, swimming pool systems operation and maintenance, plumbing fixtures, control devices, and pumps.
- Maintain, repair, and install basic distribution and irrigation systems; may include fire sprinklers, sanitary sewer, and plumbing fixtures.
- Analyze malfunctioning plumbing equipment and systems using tools and instruments of the trade, drawings, and visual inspection.
- Perform preventative maintenance of plumbing equipment; may include alarm tests and documentation.
- Order needed parts and materials.
- Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, sketches, technical manuals, and job specifications.
- Replace and/or install piping, valves, controls, pumps, and motors.
- Assist others as assigned.
- Perform general maintenance duties as assigned.
- Conduct rounds inspections and emergency service calls on campus.
- Estimate time and repair costs.
- Complete daily log sheets.
- Repair and/or build cabinets, benches, planters, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned. May assist in other operations and maintenance for University grounds and property, including buildings, walks, roadways, and equipment.
Supervision Received:
Assignments and administrative supervision are received from the Assistant Vice President and/or designee(s).
Supervision Exercised:
May be responsible for student employees assigned to them.
Hours of Position:
Most typically a second-shift weekend position. However, days and hours may vary depending upon operational needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- State of Michigan Journeyman Plumber License required.
- Must possess a current ASSE backflow prevention certification or obtain certification within the 12-month probationary period.
- Required to obtain swimming pool operator certification.
- Four years of job-related experience as a licensed plumber.
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License.
- Knowledge of plumbing, maintenance, electrical, and carpentry equipment, tools, materials, systems, and work methods.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and instructional manuals.
- Demonstrated high standards of attendance, attitude, and workmanship.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service.
- Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the University community.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team and adapt to emergency scheduling requirements.
- Ability to compile, maintain, and process reports and records using handheld devices and related technologies.
- Ability to follow and apply plumbing system safety procedures.
- Ability to identify and report facility and grounds maintenance needs.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull plumbing and maintenance equipment and materials.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and handle materials while performing duties.
- Ability to pass required physical examinations, skill tests, certifications, and licensing requirements.
- Ability to pass standardized job-related tests.
- Ability to physically and mentally perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master Plumber License preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Subject to indoor and outdoor environmental changes.
- Subject to potential hazards such as pressurized systems, electrical currents, moving parts, high places, and power tools.
