Job Summary:
The successful candidate will perform a variety of law enforcement functions, including but not limited to patrol, security, investigations, crime prevention, community policing, and traffic and parking enforcement. The successful candidate is expected at all times to diligently follow the Mission and Vision of the Saginaw Valley State University Police Department as well as the Core Values of the University.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Patrol campus grounds and perimeter in a patrol vehicle, on foot, bicycle, and 4x4 vehicle to ensure a safe environment.
- Enforce traffic regulations and respond to emergencies.
- Coordinate and provide emergency services to the campus community.
- Receive, investigate, and complete reports and complaints.
- Coordinate criminal prosecutions with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and prosecuting offices.
- Serve as a liaison with social service agencies.
- Develop and implement crime prevention and community policing initiatives.
- Assist with special events and sporting event security and patrol operations.
- Provide interim emergency medical response as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received:
Supervision is received from the Chief of Police and Police Sergeant.
Supervision Exercised:
May be responsible for training and supervising student employees and may occasionally supervise less senior officers in the absence of the Chief of Police and Police Sergeant.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) license, or licensable upon appointment.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to respond quickly to unfamiliar emergency situations.
- Ability to work under pressure for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
- Ability to utilize required law enforcement equipment including body armor, firearms, handcuffs, and related equipment.
- Ability to prepare complete and accurate reports.
- Basic computer knowledge preferred.
- Experience and ability to positively interact with diverse student populations and groups.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Work Schedule:
Work schedules will vary and may include days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays. Some overtime is required.
