Job Description
Hope College TRIO Upward Bound, Assistant Director
The TRIO Upward Bound program is funded by a grant from the Department of Education and serves local first-generation and low-income high school students who are committed to pursuing higher education after graduating high school.
The Assistant Director supports the daily operations of the program with a focus on college readiness, senior preparation, and student success. This role ensures students are supported through college access, financial aid, and enrollment processes while assisting with program compliance and implementation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Student Support & College Readiness
- Lead Senior Seminar and college readiness programming
- Assist with college applications, FAFSA, and scholarships
- Coordinate college visits
- Monitor student academic progress (especially seniors)
- Communicate with students, families, and staff
Program Coordination & Implementation
- Coordinate academic-year programming (Special/Friday Sessions)
- Oversee tutoring services and student registration
- Hire and supervise tutors
- Support Summer Session operations including dorm life, academic coaching, and Friday activities
Recruitment & Retention
- Coordinate recruitment across target schools
- Maintain a school presence as needed
- Support retention and follow-up for students who have left the program
Alumni & Follow-Up Services
- Track graduates in postsecondary education, including transcript requests
- Maintain communication and support alumni
Program Administration & Compliance
- Assist with APR reporting
- Support budget monitoring
- Assist with compliance audits
Outreach & Communication
- Manage social media and program communications
- Support outreach and visibility efforts
Qualifications
- Experience working with an educational program and/or similar projects
- Experience working with disadvantaged youth
- Experience developing and implementing programs and workshops
- Appreciation for and experience working with diverse cultures and preferably bilingual and bicultural (Spanish)
- Prior supervisory experience
- Organized and detail oriented
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Flexible schedule
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and SPSS preferred
- Bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred in education, administration, counseling, or social work
Physical Demands
This position requires remaining in a sitting or standing position for frequent periods of time; uses office machinery such as a computers, printers, copy machines; Occasionally involves moving items over 10 pounds; frequently will move between different offices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communication abilities.
