Summary
This position in the Nursing Department will provide instruction in nursing program courses that require clinical knowledge and expertise in Medical Surgical Nursing. This person is responsible for working in conjunction with the Health Occupations Academic Area toward the development and instruction of Nursing and related Allied Health courses. This individual will prepare and deliver classes; teach as assigned in clinical area; serve as team leader; conduct assessment activities; advise students on curriculum, academic programs, employment and career goals; support and contribute to the growth and development of the academic area. This position may also include teaching during weekend and evening hours and may include teaching online courses.
The successful candidate will possess a love of teaching and knowledge of adult learning theory; enjoy working with students, be a good communicator, and team player.
Qualifications
Required
• Master's degree (M.S.N.) with a major in Nursing
• Minimum of three years' clinical experience in Medical Surgical Nursing
• Teaching/training experience with clients, nurses, other health care professionals, and/or students
• Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Michigan or have the ability to obtain a license prior to start date
• BLS certification or ability to obtain within 6 months
• Word processing skills and experience (i.e. Microsoft® Word)
• Computer skills, including knowledge and experience using the Internet, email, and calendaring software (i.e., Outlook, Gmail, etc.)
Preferred
• Recent acute care medical-surgical experience
• Teaching experience in a school/college of nursing
• Leadership experience in nursing (i.e. teaching clinicals, charge nurse, unit manager, etc.)
• Certification in Medical Surgical Nursing
• Experience in the instruction of web-based, online, and other nontraditional courses
• Certification in Medical Surgical Nursing or Nursing Education
Essential Responsibilities
Provide classroom/lab instruction to students and develop theory including but not limited to online, accelerated, livestream, hybrid and face-to-face formats
Supervisory Responsibilities
This individual may supervise adjunct faculty and carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing concerns and resolving problems.
Teaching Responsibilities
When teaching any classroom or lab courses, the instructor will meet the responsibilities of regular faculty in the areas of Curriculum, Teaching Effectiveness, Faculty Professional Development, Support of College, Community Initiatives, and Professional Qualities and Abilities.
• Compiles, administers, and grades examinations and other learning activities
• Uses current and emerging technologies in distance learning and in the classroom; conducts classroom research with classroom assessment techniques
• Listens to students and coaches them to actively participate in the learning process
• Uses a variety of assessments to promotes student demonstration of learning through exams, discussions, debates, presentations, simulations, and/or debriefings
• Provides a course syllabus to the students that includes the College Syllabus information outlined in Moodle
• Is accessible to students during formal office hours and other times as needed
• Maintains and regularly updates Moodle gradebook and/or other electronic grading systems
Faculty Professional Development
Continually engages in learning and scholarship in the area of specialization
Support of College, Community Initiatives
• Participates actively in the shared governance system
• Participates in academic area meetings and other scheduled area activities.
• Meets requirements for faculty evaluation and academic advising
• Serves on specific academic area and College wide committees
• Supports the academic area and college through other work normally expected of faculty members
• Is fully committed to the mission and values of Northwestern Michigan College
