Development Program (FLDP) has been specifically designed to provide developing leaders the tools and experiences
needed to successfully transition and grow within Electric and Gas Operations.
The Field Leader Development Program is a 12 to 18 month, rotation-based, full-time position that exposes participants to
a variety of roles within a defined area of focus, while developing long-term technical and leadership skills, as well as
provides mentorship and skill-building activities. The program structure offers multiple, distinct rotations which are
field-based assignments. Individual experiences are defined by both our business needs and your strengths. The program
also involves a comprehensive list of learning activities that will provide Associates with an overview of the electric and
gas operations.
Upon completion of the Field Leader Development Program, successful candidates will be well prepared for future Field
Leader positions.
Job Description/Responsibilities
The Electric and Gas Field Leader Associate is a rotational role tasked with making decisions that balance Safety,
Productivity, Quality and Customer Interest in a well-supported environment. During the rotations, the Associate will
develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in Storm and emergency Management, Technical Learning of System
Operations & Construction Standards, Safety Compliance, Processes & Technology, Customer Interfaces, and Policy &
Procedure applications. The Field Leader Associate will not have direct reports. The Electric and Gas Field Leader
Associate will:
Manage successful business operations in the headquarters, in a cost effective manner, while maintaining a safe
working environment.
Manage and monitoring work performed by the contracted workforce.
Balance the needs of the customer, the employees and the company through collaboration with various departments,
peers and business partners.
Help to plan and prudently manage the scope, schedule and cost of day-to-day operations.
Apply a thorough understanding of policy, coupled with leadership skills to resolve process and employee issues;
Have a thorough understanding of the Working Agreement and be adept at dealing with local union leadership.
Initiate and lead change to improve business results.
Job shadow experienced Field Leaders and assist with day to day activities, giving them opportunities to experience a
broad cross-section of daily Field Leader responsibilities
Be professional and have the ability to perform effectively and efficiently in routine and non-routine/emergency situations
with minimal guidance
Monitor and provide input on work schedules for Bargaining Unit employees
Assist with guiding and directing company crews (gas and electric emergent events)
Be responsible for utilizing internal systems for soliciting response from needed crews during emergent and/or overtime
assignments
Conduct Weekly Safety Meetings and provide other communications to crews
Order tools for employees
Conduct crew visits in the field
Perform daily field audits
Perform pre-job site checks to ensure site readiness for scheduled work
Participate in other development opportunities as assigned
After development, the successful Associate will be eligible for a Field Leader position with supervisory responsibilities.
This position is intended for experienced leaders who may need to develop electric operations experience, technical
knowledge and skills. This role will have emphasized focus on Change Leadership (Change Management) and positioning
the organization for the new horizon of the Utility Industry. The Field Leader Associate will complete multiple assignments
throughout the Electric and Gas Field Organizations within a given geographic region. There are multiple positions
available, with a potential placement in (1) Northeast (Flint, Bay City, Alma, West Branch) (2) West (Grand Rapids, Norton
Shores) (3) South (Lansing, Kalamazoo, Jackson, Battle Creek, Hamilton) or (4) Southeast (Royal Oak, Livonia,
Macomb).
