SUMMARY:
The Educational Instructor will design and implement age and developmentally appropriate educational curriculum in one or more academic, technical, or vocational subjects (including ESL and physical education). This position is REQUIRED to speak Spanish. Services are provided to unaccompanied children and youth ages 10-17 residing a 24-hour shelter funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). Curricula will combine best practices in proven pedagogy models for unaccompanied children. Educational Instructor will ensure that services follow national standards of education while adhering to Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and ORR requirements to provide a unique experience for children and youth. The Educational Instructor must be culturally responsive to the academic needs of each youth. Daily instruction must be provided in a nurturing, productive learning environment that will allow students to thrive. Must strictly enforce and adhere to ORR’s Zero Tolerance Policy regarding abuse and neglect and all relevant ORR policies and procedures always ensuring the safety of the children and youth.

Class Size: Small, though growing quickly. Currently 12 or less.
Wage: ~$56,222.40 per year
Work Hours: about 40. Strong work-life balance.
Note: this is a YEAR ROUND position.
Shift: Day
MANDATORY: MUST have some sort of Teaching Certification.
Spanish Speakers are strongly preferred, but not mandatory.
Important Note: Being Biligual in Spanish is not necessary, but does help a lot. Most of the kids are Spanish-only, and lesson plans will be written in English and Spanish. English-only teachers will have PLENTY of translation assistance both electronically, and also personally from other staff members.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Plans and develops an engaging, age/developmentally appropriate course of study in the classroom, adhering to educational best practices and national academic standards.
Designs and delivers individual lesson plans in one or more academic, technical, or vocational subjects (science, social studies, math, language arts, physical education, technology, ESL, etc.) Using a variety of teaching techniques that will appeal to various learning styles.
Prepares materials for lessons and assignments. Monitors student progress, evaluates, and grades student performance. Academic progress may be evaluated using written response (ex: standard question and answer written test), observing student’s performance (ex: hands-on performance such as playing an instrument, playing a teaching video game, and showing proficiency in the content), and/or personal communication (ex: oral examinations or asking questions during regular interaction of a youth).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be at least conversational in Spanish.
- Bachelor’s degree in education or in other related fields.
- Teaching Certification with 2 years of experience working in a classroom setting with children
or
- 1 year experience working with children and youth teaching English as a Second Language AND certified in ESL. This May include Internship or Volunteer positions held.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- The ability to type and use a tablet/iPad, laptop, or desktop is needed to complete daily tasks.
- Able to work cooperatively with multiple members of a Team including program staff, state licensing personnel, ORR/Federal Field Staff, and other office personnel.
- Well organized and highly motivated.
