Functional Safety Engineer (Contract) - $70-$78/hr | Southfield, MI
We are seeking an experienced Functional Safety Engineer for a 12-month contract in Southfield, MI. This role focuses on ISO 26262 compliance, automotive safety systems, and SOTIF within an OEM or Tier 1 environment. Ideal candidates bring strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and experience in fast-paced engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
Lead development of functional safety requirements and system architecture
Conduct and approve HARA, Functional Safety Requirements, and Technical Safety Requirements
Define and implement ISO 26262 functional safety concepts across system, hardware, and software
Support SOTIF analysis for autonomous and advanced vehicle systems
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (hardware, software, validation) to ensure safety compliance
Review supplier documentation and manage functional safety interfaces
Drive safety processes, tools, metrics, and readiness activities
Support validation testing and third-party safety reviews
Qualifications
8+ years of experience in functional safety engineering
Strong expertise in ISO 26262 and safety lifecycle deliverables
Experience with SOTIF (ISO 21448) methodologies
Proficiency with tools such as Medini, APIS IQ, or Jama
Ability to interpret and communicate complex technical requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer, or Mechatronics Engineering (advanced degree preferred)
Assignment Details
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 40 hours/week (OT possible)
Duration: 12-month contract with potential extension
Travel: None required
