Summary
The Aviation Instructor is a full-time faculty member responsible for delivering comprehensive ground school instruction. You will guide students through the complexities of becoming a professional pilot, ensuring all course material meets both FAA and NMC standards.
Responsibilities may include teaching night, weekend, and online courses. This individual must be able to work independently, collaborate with others, participate in curriculum development, and follow teaching effectiveness guidelines.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 2,500 hours total flight time
• 1,000 hours pilot in command time
• 500 hours multi engine time
• 500 hours of flight instruction given
• 500 hours turbine time
• 200 hours simulated/actual instrument
• No accidents or violations
• Previous teaching experience
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Airline transport pilot, multi engine land
Commercial airplane
Flight instructor (Must have held certificate for two years.)
Instrument Flight Instructor
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS:
Ground Instructor
Essential Responsibilities
Provide classroom/lab instruction to students and develop theory including but not limited to online, accelerated, livestream, hybrid and face-to-face formats
Daily:
Teach ground school classes
Monthly:
Report student progress and needs.
Attend Staff meetings.
Annual:
Grade students on a semester basis.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
None.
Teaching Responsibilities
When teaching any classroom or lab courses, the instructor will meet the responsibilities of regular faculty in the areas of Curriculum, Teaching Effectiveness, Faculty Professional Development, Support of College, Community Initiatives, and Professional Qualities and Abilities.
• Compiles, administers, and grades examinations and other learning activities
• Uses current and emerging technologies in distance learning and in the classroom; conducts classroom research with classroom assessment techniques
• Listens to students and coaches them to actively participate in the learning process
• Uses a variety of assessments to promotes student demonstration of learning through exams, discussions, debates, presentations, simulations, and/or debriefings
• Provides a course syllabus to the students that includes the College Syllabus information outlined in Moodle
• Is accessible to students during formal office hours and other times as needed
• Maintains and regularly updates Moodle gradebook and/or other electronic grading systems
Faculty Professional Development
Continually engages in learning and scholarship in the area of specialization
Support of College, Community Initiatives
• Participates actively in the shared governance system
• Participates in academic area meetings and other scheduled area activities.
• Meets requirements for faculty evaluation and academic advising
• Serves on specific academic area and College wide committees
• Supports the academic area and college through other work normally expected of faculty members
• Is fully committed to the mission and values of Northwestern Michigan College

• Successfully organizes, executes and follows up on projects; sets specific objectives and measures to achieve results

Mathematical Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
