The City of Mt. Pleasant is seeking an experienced and collaborative professional to serve as our Building Official. This leadership role is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Building Department and ensuring the safety, compliance, and integrity of construction throughout the community.
The Building Official plays a key role in protecting life and property, guiding development, maintaining City facilities, and representing the City to residents, contractors, developers, and regulatory agencies. This position requires sound judgment, strong communication skills, and a commitment to public service excellence.
As the Building Official, you will provide leadership and oversight for building code administration, inspections, and facility management while supporting responsible community development.
This full-time, salaried position is Monday through Friday working 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with monthly evening meetings as needed for the Zoning Board of Appeals and other board meetings within the scope of the Building Official role.
Minimum qualifications include education equivalent to completion of one year of college training in building trades, engineering, public administration, or related field; bachelor’s degree preferred. Substantial experience as a construction supervisor and history as a registered Building Official is required; two years of such experience must be in a supervisory capacity. An equivalent combination of education and experience may satisfy the above requirements. Must be registered through the State of Michigan as a Building Official, Building Inspector, and Plan Reviewer, possess thorough knowledge of the Stille-DeRossett-Hale State Construction Code Act, the Michigan Building Codes, and building construction methods. Skilled in Microsoft Office 365, production of quality business communication, and case documentation are required. A valid driver’s license and a safe driving record are also required.
Starting annual salary in the $87,500 to $90,000 range, depending on qualifications.

Mt. Pleasant is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30-minute drive. The City Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of recreational programs for all ages, including youth soccer, softball, golf, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. The City operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.
