Summary
This text describes the role and responsibilities of an adjunct faculty member in the Art Department, specifically for teaching Ceramics I and II at Northwestern Michigan College (NMC). The adjunct instructor will prepare and deliver lessons, collaborate with other faculty, and maintain studio space for students. They are expected to encourage active learning, manage class records, assess student work promptly, and communicate progress to students. The role supports the mission of NMC and the Humanities Academic Area, with a start date in August 2026 for the fall semester.
Qualifications for candidates include a bachelor’s degree and at least three years of professional art practice, along with skills in mixing clay and glazes and firing kilns. A preferred qualification is a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in ceramics and previous teaching experience, especially at the college level.
The essential responsibilities of the adjunct faculty include teaching effectively across various formats (online, hybrid, and face-to-face), engaging in professional development, and supporting college and community initiatives. The instructor will handle administrative tasks such as compiling and grading exams, listening to student feedback, utilizing technology in teaching, and maintaining an updated course syllabus and gradebook.
While no supervisory responsibilities are assigned, the adjunct faculty must attend required training sessions, report grades on time, keep accurate records, meet scheduled classes, provide accommodations as needed, and comply with college policies, including those related to student privacy and feedback processes. They are also expected to participate in college meetings and professional development activities.
In addition to teaching, non-instructional responsibilities include completing college reporting after the instructional period, developing curriculum for future courses, and responding to institutional communication in a timely manner.
The work environment requires certain physical and technical skills, including computer proficiency, the ability to engage in logical reasoning, and basic mathematical skills. Physical demands may involve standing, walking, and occasionally lifting items. Employees may be exposed to elements such as fumes and moderate noise levels, and reasonable accommodations will be provided for individuals with disabilities.
Finally, the hiring for this position is managed by a third-party staffing agency, EduStaff, and candidates selected must comply with EduStaff's onboarding requirements as part of NMC’s process.
