Summary
The position provides comprehensive academic and transfer advising, and career counseling services for all NMC degrees, including developing and updating resources and tools, interpreting standardized assessments and transfer information. This position implements, and facilitates career development and exploration services. Advisors design and conduct staff and faculty development in advising related topics through the formulation of continued, comprehensive trainings and oneonone consultation. To facilitate the transfer process advisors maintain vital external relationships with two and fouryear institutions.
Qualifications
Master's degree (Required)
Between 2 and 5 years of related experience (Required)
Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Higher Education or related field (Required)
Prior advising experience, including career advising and testing interpretation (Required)
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Certification or ability to obtain within one year of start date (Required)
Experience using web editing software (Preferred)
Experience with Student Information System (SIS) (Preferred)
Essential Responsibilities
• (Critical) Provides both online and inperson comprehensive academic advising, career counseling, and transfer advising (i.e. educational planning and career exploration, goal establishment, course planning and selection, registration, transfer coordination, and graduation requirements) to facilitate student retention and completion.
• (Critical) Participates, provides expertise in the implementation of the Guided Pathways approach and strategic enrollment management strategies related to student retention and ontime completion.
• (Critical) Provides students opportunity to discuss academic goals, concerns, and issues while providing the freedom and security for students to discuss academic and life issues that may impede or interfere with those goals.
• (Critical) Develops a strategic academic advising plan for individual students; facilitates student comprehension of degree program, sequencing of courses, and, where necessary, intervenes with support resources, and referrals to other Student Services areas.
• (Critical) Designs and implements program of targeted academic advising for all atrisk, probationary, suspended and reinstated students including the development of an academic plan for success, persistence and ontime completion.
• (Critical) Assesses and analyzes the needs of unique student populations to inform the development of critical interventions, strategies and programs.
• (Critical) Uses data to plan and maintain systematic and frequent contact with advisees and coordinates communications to students regarding registration, academic probation, and career development.
• (Critical) Maintains thorough knowledge of campus and community resources to conduct needs assessments and inform/refer students as appropriate. Considers financial aid impact of academic decisions.
• (Critical) Develops and/or facilitates resources, special campuswide events and programs related to comprehensive academic and transfer advising and career counseling.
• (Critical) Creates strategic plan for assisting students in decisionmaking, to facilitate informed career and program of study decisions and subsequent course selections through guided discussion, use of various resources, and/or individual/group interpretation of standardized career assessments.
• (Critical) Establishes and executes advising and career counseling learning outcomes to implement "advising as teaching" across the institution to encourage student growth and development of decisionmaking, goal setting, and selfadvocacy competencies.
• (Critical) Enhances Advising Center functions using technology to facilitate online advising, student use of resources, and career development and exploration, including webpage editing and online program/training development.
• (Critical) Regularly conducts confidential conversations with students, staff, faculty and administrators. Manages confidential information with tact, discretion, and in compliance with FERPA regulations per institutional policies.
• (Critical) Provides expertise, training, and assistance to faculty regarding transfer information including the development and maintenance of transfer guides, course equivalencies, college websites, and Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) information.
• (Critical) Serves as liaison and fosters intentional relationships with faculty advisors, department chairs, and Student Services personnel; creates and coordinates new advisor training and ongoing advisor development.
• (Critical) Establishes and maintains working relationships with university partners and acts as liaison to fouryear institutions and University Center partners in the development and maintenance of transfer information and contacts.
• (Critical) Collaborates with oncampus offices and departments to provide seamless communication and services to students.
• (Critical) Serves as the central resource regarding NMC policies and procedures for students, faculty and staff as related to academic and career decisions.
• (Critical) Adapts academic advising and career counseling practices to respond to market changes and to meet community needs. Expands services for dual enrolled and early college students to align institutional practices with statewide trends and the Michigan Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act.
