General Summary
The Bus Assistant, under the direction of Transportation leadership, is responsible for assisting the Bus Driver in the safe transportation of special education students and ensuring a safe, comfortable, and hazard-free environment on the bus.
Essential Job Responsibilities

Provide safe and comfortable conditions for students riding SISD buses.

Assist students as they enter and exit the bus, including loading and unloading wheelchair users.

Ensure all pupils are seated before the vehicle is in motion. Assist with refastening seat belts when needed.

Ensure students who require safety restraint systems are properly secured before the bus moves.

Observe student behavior and use approved techniques to address concerns.

Assist with bus emergency evacuation procedures.

Clean the interior of the assigned bus, including sweeping floors, wiping seats, and cleaning windows during non-pupil supervisory time.

Ensure proper supervision and safety when students cross roads, including ensuring students pass in front of the bus.

Appropriately secure wheelchairs.

Maintain confidentiality regarding student, parent, and staff information.

Maintain a positive, professional attitude with students, families, community members, and staff.
Other Job Responsibilities
-
Prepare and maintain route sheets.

Complete “Accident Reports” following any incident involving the bus or passengers.

Prepare required reports and maintain necessary records.

Assist Transportation leadership with mapping routes and planning schedules as needed.

Perform additional duties as required by the Transportation Director and in assistance to the Bus Driver.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalency
-
Prior experience working with children
-
Ability to lift at least 75 pounds
-
Excellent oral and written communication skills

Ability to work well with others
-
Willingness to wear a district-provided back support brace

Willingness to receive additional training
-
Strong attendance history
-
Strong references
-
Basic computer keyboarding skills desired
