Rate of Pay: $131,635.50 to $171,000.00 per Year
Duties: Lead research and development activities for Orthopedic Instruments. Responsible for contributing and executing early research of customer pain points and providing design solutions from concept to production, in addition to providing technical expertise across with the Mechanical Engineering program team. Collaborate with other focused thought leaders and partner with R&D teams to conceptualize, develop and release solutions to improve surgery outcomes. Lead research, design, development, modification and evaluation of modules, assemblies, or subsystems. Apply and mentor others on advanced engineering theories, principles, and concepts. Translate user needs to design inputs and specifications. Produce complex system-level designs independently. Conduct, design, and select advanced prototyping and testing. Lead and guide in correction of complex product design issues. Conduct technology exploration and influence applications in the business. Develop invention disclosures, patents or trade secrets. Contribute to competitive and market strategy. Enhance product development. Contribute and execute customer-facing activities including voice of customer and customer centric design in partnership with internal and external stakeholders. Mentor others as a business unit expert on the usage of industry standards, including design requirements and test strategies per applicable regulations. Lead others to create and refine engineering documentation, including the Design History file, and create more progressive technical content. Contribute to R&D procedures and development of industry standards working closely with cross-functional business units. Work cooperatively with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing and Project Management to ensure project success. Identify and lead the creation of or improvements to procedures, policies, processes, systems, and technology required. Develop, research, and prototype, leveraging multiple methodologies for evaluation. Contribute to complex product development through release and lead one technical area of expertise.
Position requires 15% domestic travel.
Requirements: Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering and eight (8) years of experience developing and optimizing complex designs for mechanical / electro-mechanical assemblies incorporating DFM principles. Alternatively, employer will accept Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering and six (6) years of experience developing and optimizing complex designs for mechanical / electro-mechanical assemblies incorporating DFM principles. Also, employer will accept PhD in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering and four (4) years of experience developing and optimizing complex designs for mechanical / electro-mechanical assemblies incorporating DFM principles. Position also requires experience in the following: motor design, gear box design, technical risk assessment, drivetrain and mechanism design, stack up analysis, trade studies and ethnographic interviewing techniques, including applying knowledge of design controls for medical devices; creating engineering drawings, models, and applying GD&T and CAE tools to optimize the design; supporting complex product development through application of knowledge of materials, manufacturing and processing methods and technologies; communicating complex plans and technical information to team members; performing 3D modeling on complex geometries, stack ups, with Creo CAD and/or Solidworks; and, leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams for product realization.
