The Position
Under the direction of the MSA Coordinator, the Middle School Athletics Assistant Coach will instruct middle school athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success in their program. Assistant Coaches will strive to provide each student with the opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity. Understand and abide by all GMCC, MHSAA, and MPS policies, regulations, procedures, and guidelines. Must maintain high personal standards and adhere to and carry out the mission of the GMCC.
Major Job Responsibilities
- Assist with supervising student athletes to promote effective student learning through participation in athletic activities.
- Assist with creating plans, developing strategies, and implementing an effective program for the identified sport to prepare athletes both physically and mentally to participate with confidence and self assurance in athletic contests.
- Assist with preparing and conducting practice sessions that are both stimulating and instructive. Practices will teach fundamental sport skills, as well as emphasize and promote good sportsmanship in the conduct of team members and coaches.
- Assist with the responsibility for all phases of the program involving coordination of facility use in conjunction with MSA Coordinator.
- Communicates effectively, positively, and professionally with athletes, parents, officials, and school administrators.
- Assist with establishing an effective system for issuing and returning equipment and maintaining records including dates and times of issuance.
- Assist with making written recommendations to the MSA Coordinator regarding program, facilities, and transportation problems.
- Assist with completing, in a timely manner, all requests from supervisor in the achievements of departments and center goals and objectives.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must be at least 21 years of age (WIAA regulation)
- Minimum of two years of experience as an assistant coach
- Knowledge of effective coaching practices/techniques for the identified sport.
- Or, any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work and that meets federal and state requirements. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be evaluated by the Athletics Director and MSA Coordinator.
Physical Requirements
Work with students in outdoor playing fields, indoor and outdoor courts, gymnasiums, or other sports facilities; physical ability to lift and move sports equipment and demonstrate sports skills when necessary; may be exposed to infectious diseases and inclement weather. Maintain emotional control under stress. Hours vary and include nights, weekends, and out-of-town travel. Off-site work required.
