Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Engineering Controls Specialist to support and improve manufacturing control systems, automation, and plant equipment performance. This role focuses on troubleshooting, programming, and optimizing PLC- and robot-controlled systems while leveraging Factory Information Systems (FIS) data to improve safety, quality, and productivity.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement improvements to control systems and automation using FIS data
Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis of equipment, automation, and controls issues
Coordinate resources to resolve performance issues and validate corrective actions
Program and reprogram PLC, CNC, robots, and automation systems for engineering changes
Maintain and manage program backups for machinery and automation equipment
Support integration of controls with IT systems such as FIS, Error Proofing, QWX, and QTS
Review cycle times and equipment performance using plant monitoring software
Support new installations of automation, robotics, material handling, and machinery
Assist in training manufacturing personnel and plant electricians
Review project installations and participate in equipment safety risk assessments
Required Skills & Experience
5+ years of experience in Controls Engineering, Automation, or Manufacturing Engineering
Strong PLC programming and troubleshooting experience
Experience with Siemens, Allen-Bradley, and/or Rexroth PLC controllers
Knowledge of manufacturing automation, CNC, and robotics systems
Ability to work cross-functionally with UAW maintenance, vendors, and process teams
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Demonstrated leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
High School Diploma or GED (required)
Preferred Skills & Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
Experience with robotics and computer vision systems
Siemens Step 7 and TIA Portal programming and troubleshooting
Familiarity with UL508A and NFPA 79 safety standards
Fanuc robot and controls troubleshooting experience
Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma experience
Structured problem-solving methods (8D, 5-Why)
Experience with 5S, Kanban, Poka-Yoke, and Value Stream Mapping
Education
Required: High School Diploma / GED
Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
