Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) is looking for an Assistant Professor in the Dental Auxiliary Department on a tenure track basis. The role requires candidates who are enthusiastic about working with diverse students of various backgrounds, including differing ages and abilities. Faculty members are accountable to GRCC for completing departmental work as well as tasks related to the School of Health Sciences. They are expected to possess strong communication skills, collaborate well, and show personal initiative to solve problems and meet deadlines. Faculty will be responsible for their work while upholding GRCC’s values in a setting that promotes innovation. The position includes 42 weeks of work over fall, winter, and summer semesters. Responsibilities involve teaching community dental hygiene courses, overseeing community-based oral health projects, establishing partnerships with dental providers, and ensuring compliance with infection control policies. Faculty will manage student rotations at community sites and ensure instructional consistency across clinical courses. They should also assess student performance, foster a learning-centered classroom environment, and engage in professional development.
Candidates for this position should possess at least a bachelor’s degree in a health or education-related field, with a master’s degree preferred. They must hold a current Michigan dental hygiene license and certification in local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation or be able to obtain them before starting. Additionally, BLS certification is required.
A minimum of two years of clinical dental hygiene experience and two years of teaching experience is necessary, with preference given to those familiar with curriculum design and educational technology. Candidates should have excellent communication, organizational, problem-solving, and presentation skills, as well as the ability to provide outstanding service to students. Their work will require physical strengths, such as lifting patients and performing dental hygiene skills while also having mental flexibility to handle sensitive situations professionally.
