JOB TITLE: School BusDiesel Mechanic- Jackson Public Schools

JOB SUMMARY:
We are seeking a detail-oriented School Bus Diesel Mechanic. The School Bus Diesel Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing school buses and other diesel-powered vehicles to ensure safe and efficient operation. This role involves diagnosing mechanical issues, performing preventative maintenance, and conducting repairs on various vehicle systems.
*This is a 12-month position*
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Knowledge of materials, safety related equipment, automotive /bus trade codes, locate and adjust defects in auto/bus systems.
· Identify mechanical problems using diagnostic equipment and perform necessary repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, and other systems.
· Perform skilled work in connection with the installation, repair, and maintenance of automotive equipment.
· Conduct regular inspections and maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, and brake checks to prevent breakdowns.
· Ability to maintain operating and test records, write clear work orders, requisitions, and material list. Maintain detailed records of all maintenance and repair work performed, including parts used and labor hours.
· Perform safety inspections on school buses to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
· Respond to emergency breakdowns and perform on-site repairs as needed.
· Lift heavy equipment, climb and work from ladders, run power machines and tools.
· Overhaul motors, condensers, coils, diesel systems, wiring, replace/repairs points, pumps, injectors, brake shoes, cams, master cylinders, differentials, transmissions, master cylinders, springs, steering, body work and be able to weld.
· Work with other mechanics and transportation staff to ensure the fleet is in optimal condition.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Minimum of 3 years of experience in diesel engine repair and maintenance, preferably with school buses or similar vehicles.
· High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in diesel mechanics is preferred.
· Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Knowledgeable and proficient in the use of protective safety equipment
· Must be able to maintain mechanical certificates as required by the state of Michigan.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Vocational training in diesel mechanics.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Ability to lift heavy parts and equipment.
· Comfortable working in various weather conditions.
· Capable of standing, bending, and kneeling for extended periods.
Skills, Certifications and Licenses:
· Must maintain a Class B CDL with Air Brake, Passenger and School Bus Endorsements.
· Must be able to maintain mechanical certificates as required by the state of Michigan.
· Must maintain DOT physical and participate in the DOT random drug & Alcohol testing as required by the DOT.
· Must pass a state and Federal Criminal Background check (fingerprint) as required by METS and the district.
