The role - what you'll do
Barr is seeking a process engineer to join our team. The person in this position will work with multidisciplinary project teams providing process engineering and related technical expertise. The work will primarily serve heavy industrial clients in oil and gas, mining, power, specialty chemical, and manufacturing.
A successful person in this role will have strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. They possess exceptional organizational skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and have a flexible working style-equally comfortable with independent work and team-based projects. They are also willing to occasionally modify their schedule to meet deadlines and/or client needs.
Your impact - key responsibilities
Multidisciplinary collaboration: contribute to cross-functional project teams delivering engineering solutions for industrial clients, including those in oil and gas, power generation, mining, and manufacturing sectors.
Project management and execution: manage or support projects, including preparing engineering budgets and tracking progress relative to scope and schedule. Develop capital and operating cost estimates and bid packages.
Technical contribution: system design related to fluid transfer, process modeling, heat transfer, and plant equipment layout; prepare design and/or construction drawings and specifications (including PFDs and P&IDs); complete engineering calculations and analyses; oversee third-party process test work; size and specify equipment and components; write technical reports; and develop capital and operating cost estimates.
Mentorship: Provide guidance and leadership to entry-level engineers and interns in a project context, delegating and overseeing tasks as needed.
About the opportunity
Compensation: anticipated range of $85,000-$100,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as an exempt (salaried) position under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position may be based out of our Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Reno, Hibbing, Denver, Bismarck, or Ann Arbor offices.
Travel expectation: approximately 5%-10%.
Work environment: ability to work in an office environment and ability to work in locations that include rough terrain typical of construction, manufacturing, and/or rural outdoor sites with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
About you - required core competencies
Education: bachelor's degree in chemical, metallurgical, or mechanical engineering.
Experience: five or more years of related experience.
Experience working at industrial sites, either in oil and gas, power generation, specialty chemical, mining, or manufacturing industries.
Working knowledge of codes and guidelines related to process safety.
Experience developing PFDs and P&IDs, pipe sizing and specifications, equipment sizing and specifications, and related process development items.
Software: familiarity with Microsoft Office software, Bluebeam, and process simulation modeling such as Metsim, Aspen, or SysCAD.
Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.
Helpful additional experience (not required)
Eight years of related experience.
Three or more years of experience working in heavy industrial facilities.
EIT or Professional Engineer license.
Experience working on industrial construction projects.
Experience conducting technical and economic feasibility studies, market studies, and related studies.
Experience involving process safety, pumping and piping systems, chemical manufacturing, environmental control technology integration, water treatment, gas compression systems, and/or other relevant process systems.
