Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Project Estimator to support project management teams by developing, monitoring, and updating project cost estimates and integrated project plans. This is an individual contributor role and offers a contract position with the opportunity for direct hire based on performance and business needs.
Position is a hybrid role; qualified candidates must live in the metro Detroit area and able to work onsite in Detroit.
Responsibilities
- Develop, monitor, and update electrical project cost estimates
- Prepare Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM), budgetary, unit pricing, and definitive (detailed) estimates
- Review design documents and scope packages for completeness and accuracy
- Validate contractor and engineering estimates, including quantity verification
- Review and challenge contractor bids for scope accuracy and pricing
- Review change orders for scope and cost accuracy
- Develop estimate details by WBS to cost-load project schedules
- Perform cost analysis including risk analysis, benchmarking, value engineering, and constructability reviews
- Develop and maintain estimating standards, processes, procedures, and templates
- Ensure estimating and planning controls are implemented and maintained
- Participate in continuous improvement efforts, lessons learned, and after-action reviews
- Support multiple projects in a team or matrixed environment
Qualifications
Required (one of the following):
- Associate degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field) with 8+ years of estimating experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field) with 6+ years of estimating experience
Skills
- Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience reading electrical plans and calculating labor/material costs
- Experience with large construction projects, preferably renewable energy (solar, wind)
- Electrical experience with substations, overhead, and underground cable systems
- Experience estimating full project lifecycle costs
- Familiarity with on-screen takeoff or other estimating software
Work Environment & Requirements
- Ability to work in power plant or construction environments (stairs, hot or confined spaces)
- Occasional travel to project sites as needed
- Ability to manage shifting priorities and work cross-functionally
