Job Description

No degree or experience is required – you will receive pay and benefits while in training.
Motor Carrier Officers are members of the Michigan State Police (MSP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED). They specialize in commercial vehicles, with duties including:

Traffic enforcement and crash investigation

Driver and vehicle inspections

Criminal interdiction
-
Hazardous material transport oversight

Regulatory compliance

Weigh station operation

Infrastructure protection

General emergency response
Motor Carrier Officer patrol is self-directed and encourages proactive, independent decision-making.
Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, applicants will be asked to submit their post assignment preference. Every effort is made to honor requests while balancing the personnel needs of the agency. Applicants will receive their post assignment when appointed to a recruit school.
The 28th Motor Carrier Officer Recruit School start date is planned for 2026.
Training occurs at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing, Michigan. Recruits receive hands-on, lecture, and scenario-based instruction in firearms, patrol techniques, first aid, criminal law, precision driving, water safety, defensive tactics, report writing, ethics, FMCSA regulations, cultural diversity, and implicit bias.

During the academy, recruits receive approximately $3,850 per month with benefits.

Officers can reach a top pay of over $71,000 after 6 years.

Officers are eligible to transfer or promote to different posts after completion of the training program.

Most schedules prioritize day shifts, require working 1 weekend day a month, and provide 13 paid holidays off each year.

Applicants MUST take and PASS the NTN Entry Level Law Enforcement exam.

Applicants MUST take and PASS a Baseline Fitness Test (accepted: MSP Baseline Fitness Test, MCOLES Pre-Enrollment Physical Fitness Test, Military Annual Fitness Test, Out-of-State Law Enforcement Fitness Test).

Applicants MUST take and PASS the MCOLES Pre-Enrollment Physical Fitness test through MSP when receiving a conditional offer of employment.

Willingness to submit to a thorough background investigation designed to measure suitability for police work.

Must be a United States citizen.

Must be a resident of the State of Michigan before graduation from the Academy.

Must be at least 21 years of age by recruit school graduation.

Must have a valid Michigan driver’s license by recruit school graduation.
