Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Road Patrol Sergeant, the Deputy Sheriff patrols roads throughout Saginaw County to enforce criminal and traffic laws and protect the public and property. Responsibilities include responding to dispatched calls or complaints, investigating accidents, preparing reports, serving warrants, and performing a wide variety of law enforcement tasks in service to the community. This position also provides building security at various county and contracted facilities and performs other law enforcement duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
Law Enforcement Activities Include:

Respond to calls or complaints dispatched by Central Dispatch or the Sheriff’s Administrative Dispatch for incidents such as domestic disputes, barking dogs, robberies, automobile accidents, and other situations.

Patrol state and county roadways and enforce traffic laws. Check driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations, apprehend suspects, and issue citations for speeding, equipment violations, and other motor vehicle code offenses.

Check for outstanding warrants and take appropriate action using various enforcement devices such as radar and breathalyzer equipment.

Investigate motor vehicle accidents; as first on scene, take charge of the accident site, administer emergency first aid, and secure medical assistance when necessary. Prepare related citations and reports.

Transport prisoners to and from court, mental health facilities, medical facilities, and jails outside Saginaw County.

Prepare reports and maintain a log of all daily activities.

Serve as Transport Officer, Booking Officer, or Security Officer as assigned.

Attend court as required, either during shift or off-duty, and provide clear and accurate testimony.

Valid State of Michigan driver’s license.

Must be MCOLES certified or certifiable.

Must successfully complete the employment screening process, which may include oral evaluations, psychological testing, physical and drug screening, and a complete background investigation.
