The Michigan Catholic Conference is seeking a Vice President of Public Policy and Advocacy to join their team in Lansing, MI. As Vice President of Public Policy and Advocacy, you will serve on the MCC executive team and lead the development and implementation of public policy advocacy strategies. In addition, you will oversee the Public Policy staff, manage budgeting with the CFO, and recruit, develop, and direct the department in line with MCC policies.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.
- Oversee the Public Policy department’s operations, staffing, and committee coordination, report progress and outcomes to the President and Board of Directors.
- Monitor, analyze, and interpret pending legislation affecting the Michigan Catholic Conference (MCC), recommending appropriate policy positions and actions.
- Engage with legislators, administrators, and government officials to advocate for MCC-supported legislation and influence policy outcomes.
- Build coalitions with organizations and individuals sharing similar goals to advance MCC’s legislative and policy objectives.
- Represent the MCC publicly by preparing and delivering speeches to parishes, Catholic organizations, and other groups to promote understanding of its mission and policies.
- Develop, manage, and evaluate Public Policy staff, ensuring personnel are qualified, trained, and aligned with MCC standards and objectives.
- Conduct regular staff performance evaluations, providing feedback, mentoring, and salary recommendations in collaboration with executive leadership.
- Serve on the executive team, collaborating with other vice presidents to support policy, program, and financial operations.
- Prepare and manages the annual Public Policy department budget in partnership with the CFO and President/CEO.
- Assist with strategic planning, board preparation, and external representation to support MCC’s mission, maintain compliance, and strengthen its public image.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Language Arts, Political Science, Public Relations or a related field is required.
- 4+ years of executive level experience is strongly preferred.
- 2+ years of experience working in a leadership role preferred.
- Practicing Catholic in good standing with the church required.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.
- Exceptional communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Able to work with a high level of discretion, integrity, and confidentiality.
- Excellent writing and presentation skills.
- Strong working knowledge of Michigan State government and the legislative development processes in the State of Michigan.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Federal and State of Michigan laws and regulations that impact the mission/views of the Catholic Church.
- Working knowledge of the structures, functions, and policies of the Catholic Church and its teachings.
