Title: Billing Specialist

Job Summary: The billing specialist(s) assists with processing and reviewing all health center charges in the billing system, batches, and sends claims to third party payors, post payments, and researches all claim denials. Follows policies and procedures to ensure accurate accounting of all charges and revenues.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
• Primary contact to process new applications and renewals for the health center’s sliding fee scale program.
Posts payments made by third party payors, patients, or other sources to the appropriate account in the billing system.
Performs various collection actions, including setting up patient payment and/or budget plans, sending pre-list and bad debt letters to patients, sending patients to collections, working with collections agency to update patient accounts.
• Fulfills medical records requests within required timeframes.
• Continuously addresses and investigates all billing claim denials and rejections received by third party payors.
• Manages aging accounts receivable timely and efficiently to ensure payments are received.
• Assists with patient statements on a regular schedule as directed.
• Assists with billing authorizations.
• Assists in the verification and clarification of insurance coverage.
• Assists patients who have billing questions pleasantly and courteously.
• Responds appropriately to emergent situations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications :
Required
• High school graduate or successful completion of G.E.D. program.
• At least two years medical billing experience.
Preferred
• Certification in medical billing and coding.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Required:
Candidate must:
• Must have knowledge of computer systems and skills to learn software systems.
• Must have basic knowledge of billing, coding, and general medical terminology.
• Must understand the medical insurance rules and concepts, and explanations of codes and benefits.
• Must have the ability to communicate in a positive manner and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with patients, providers, and other employees.
• Must have the ability to maintain the confidentiality of records, documents or discussions related to clinic functions.
• Attendance is an essential element of this position.
