The purpose of this job is to perform inspections for compliance with Municipal, State, and National codes and identifies defects and potential hazards. Perform residential and commercial building inspections. Consults with engineers, architects, developers, contractors, owners, and the public. Inspects complicated institutional and commercial projects. Leads, trains, advises, and assists staff with questions and major projects.

- Conducts inspections of industrial, residential and commercial properties to assure compliance with municipal, state and national building codes and to identify defects in structural elements
- Consults with engineers, builders, contractors and owners regarding the provisions of the building codes, ordinances, laws and design criteria and requirements; makes recommendations and solves construction problems
- Reviews construction plans; works with plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and zoning inspectors on final inspections, problems, and permits; makes recommendations for procedural and code changes
- Coordinates, plans, directs and assigns the work of lower level building inspectors; provides training to subordinate employees
- Issues and authorizes use and occupancy permits; issues building permits; issues violation notices; conducts follow-up inspections; provides court testimony on building code violations
- Maintains records and prepares statistical, written and oral reports on activities
- Handles complaints from the public, answers questions from the public, realtors, contractors and builders
- Submits complaint documents to the State of Michigan
- Utilizes computer systems to obtain information and make result entries for completed inspections
- Performs related work as required
