Apprentice I is a full-time position within the Hannahville Housing Department that provides hands-on training and experience in residential construction and maintenance. The position works under the direct supervision of the Crew Leader or, when designated, an Apprentice Level II or III.
The successful candidate will assist with a variety of construction and housing projects, including rough carpentry, framing and plumbing wood-framed walls, installation of roof trusses and windows, and interpretation of blueprints and dimensional layouts. Interior responsibilities include installing baseboards, casing, kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, countertops, extension jambs, drywall, painting, and general repairs. Exterior duties include the installation of siding, soffit, fascia, roofing materials, gutters, decks, porches, and interior and exterior doors. The position requires the ability to work safely, follow directions, and contribute effectively as part of a construction crew while developing skilled trade competencies.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in the building trades, residential construction, or a related field.
- Current forklift certification preferred; certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire if not currently held.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and meet all insurance carrier requirements for the operation of Housing Department vehicles.
- Working knowledge of basic construction practices, blueprint reading, and the safe use of hand and power tools.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in both indoor and outdoor environments and under varying weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and ability to follow established safety procedures and workmanship standards.
- As a condition of employment, applicants must successfully pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, child care/vulnerable adult background check, and a Basic Services Test.
- Applicants must demonstrate the ability to perform entry-level construction and maintenance tasks through successful completion of the Housing Department Basic Services Test. Areas assessed may include basic math calculations, measuring techniques, reading plans and specifications, safety procedures, construction tool identification and usage, and general building trades’ knowledge.
