Job Description
Ingham County Animal Control & Shelter is looking to add a veterinarian to it’s amazing team. Our vets enjoy flexible work schedules and work from home opportunities. We also offer a signing bonus. We have 2 experienced vet assistants to help in the daily caseload, working in a new state of the art clinic and surgical suite with full diagnostic capabilities on site.
Under the general supervision of the Animal Control Director will perform surgeries, spay/neuter, pre-surgery exams and provide medical care to ill and injured animals at the shelter. Establish and administer a comprehensive shelter medicine program to ensure overall health, treatment and diagnosis of shelter animals. Maintain proper medical records. Supervises, schedules and trains the veterinary assistant.
Develop, implement and manage a comprehensive shelter medicine program including preventative medicine, disease mitigation, surgeries including spay/neuter, evaluation and treatment of shelter animals, evidence gathering for criminal cases and other duties. Stays informed on new developments in shelter medicine and modifies the shelter medical program as needed.
Develop and manage partnerships with veterinarians, colleges, universities and vocational training programs for veterinarians and veterinary technicians, animal related non-profits and other entities to expand ICAC’s capacity to provide high quality care to its animals and animals in our community and to assist in training of shelter medical professionals.
Perform surgeries, spay/neuter, pre-surgery exams and general shelter medicine to ill and injured animals at the shelter in accordance with acceptable professional standards.
Ensure ICACS veterinary licenses and registrations are current and up to date. Ensure compliance with state and federally mandated drug inventory and reporting requirements.
Ensure overall health, treatment and diagnosis of shelter animals by providing physical exams, treatment and follow up as needed on known medical issues and re-checks.
Ensure proper documentation of daily medical procedures, physical exams, diagnosis, treatment, medications and follow up.
Responsible for conducting drug inventory for both controlled and non-controlled substances and ensures a consistent supply of veterinary and animal care supplies are maintained.
Assists the Director or their designee in annual budget preparation and monitors the animal care budget throughout the year.
Develops standard operating procedures regarding animal care and welfare for animals in the custody of ICACS.
Interviews, trains, supervises, and evaluates veterinary technician or assistant.
Trains all staff in the awareness of diseases and injury, the spread of infectious diseases, detection and prevention.
Provide veterinary evaluation, care and documentation for animals involved in cruelty and other criminal cases including testifying in court or in deposition.
Is on-call as needed to assist in animal welfare related issues.
Other Functions:

Education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from an Association of American Veterinary Medical College accredited school.
Experience: Experience with large and small animal veterinary care. Experience with shelter medicine a plus.

This position is exposed to noise levels which require shouting in order to be heard.
This position is exposed to communicable diseases, blood, other body fluids, etc.
This position works closely with domestic and wild animals with unpredictable temperaments.
This position is provided, and required to use, Personal Protection Equipment to minimize the risks associated with the working conditions listed above.
