General Summary:
Saginaw Public Schools is seeking a dedicated Before and After the Bell Program Assistant to support both morning and afternoon programming at Handley Elementary. This role is critical in providing safe, structured, and engaging experiences for students outside of standard school hours. The ideal candidate is flexible, child-centered, and eager to contribute to a high-quality enrichment environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist with daily program operations before and after school, as directed by the Program Director

Learn and participate in all program phases: recruitment, planning, implementation, and evaluation

Supervise student sign-in and sign-out procedures

Prepare and monitor distribution of daily snacks

Assist in planning and delivering developmentally appropriate program sessions

Create and maintain a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment

Build professional, supportive relationships with students, parents, staff, and the school community

Attend required staff meetings and training sessions

Communicate effectively and respectfully with children, staff, and families

Carry out additional duties as assigned to support program success
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Understanding of age-appropriate activities and child development

Familiarity with learning styles and positive behavior reinforcement strategies

Competency in basic math, grammar, and written communication

Ability to operate classroom and recreational equipment

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to multitask and remain organized amid frequent interruptions

Able to maintain confidentiality and follow multi-step directions

Comfort working in a multicultural, urban educational setting

Enthusiasm for youth development and enrichment programming
Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent
-
Experience working with elementary or middle/high school-aged students preferred
-
Previous experience coordinating or facilitating youth programs is a plus
Compensation:
$12.48 per hour
This reflects Michigan’s minimum wage and aligns with a first-year hire rate for entry-level support staff.
