General Summary:
Saginaw Public Schools Social Workers are responsible for promoting and enhancing the overall academic mission by providing services that strengthen home/school/community partnerships and alleviate barriers to learning. The School Social Worker significantly contributes to the development of a healthy, safe, and caring environment by advancing the understanding of the emotional and social development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success, and by implementing effective intervention strategies.

Understanding of laws, court procedures, regulations, and political processes

Proficiency in assessing behavior and affective disorders

Familiarity with diagnostic, treatment, and counseling methods

Capacity to build strong rapport with students, families, and staff
Duties and Responsibilities:

Assess student behavioral issues and assist with causal evaluations
-
Conduct social development studies for special education referrals
-
Evaluate students to determine eligibility for services
-
Observe and use multiple assessments in varied settings
-
Analyze findings and make service recommendations
-
Serve as liaison among school, home, and community
-
Refer students and parents to support resources
-
Maintain updated referral resource lists
-
Support parents and offer consultation
-
Assist staff in planning and meeting student needs
-
Promote awareness of school social work services
-
Advocate for all students
-
Provide updates on special service availability
-
Report and follow child abuse/neglect procedures
-
Collaborate with families on school-related challenges
-
Consult with staff regarding student progress
-
Offer administrative and instructional support
-
Develop individualized programs for student growth
-
Plan and deliver in-service training as needed
-
Participate in school-wide growth and skills activities
-
Deliver targeted services based on academic/social/emotional needs
-
Create intervention strategies tailored to individual behavior styles
-
Guide parents in effective support methods
-
Use appropriate tools and resources for student success
-
Identify barriers to learning due to cultural, emotional, or physical issues
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
-
Master’s Degree in Social Work or equivalent, with 45 graduate semester hours
-
Valid SSW 310 approval
-
Completion of 500-clock-hour supervised internship with school-aged students
-
Fully approved by the Michigan Department of Education
-
Prior experience preferred
-
Willingness to complete required coursework if needed
Salary:
Based on education level and experience.
