SUMMARY
The Assistant Teacher will support the North Central Michigan College Early Learning Center (ELC) mission and vision. This position serves as a critical member of a team of educators tasked with supporting an inclusive and nurturing learning environment where children are empowered to explore, question, collaborate, and construct knowledge enthusiastically and confidently. The primary role of the Assistant Teacher is to support and supervise children while working closely with the lead and Associate teacher.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Classroom Role:
- Support the classroom in alignment with the institution's vision and mission, fostering a culture of curiosity, creativity, and inclusivity.
- Provide classroom support in implementing the Reggio Emilia philosophy, ensuring children's holistic development and independent thinking.
- Support developmentally appropriate practice and the implementation of a play-based, inquiry-driven curriculum that responds to children's interests and curiosity.
- Collaborate with staff to create an environment that acts as a third teacher, filled with inspiring materials and resources.
- Take initiative in, and have a global awareness of, all aspects of the Assistant Teacher role including classroom support, social-emotional needs of children, moving effectively through the daily schedule, and adjusting to the needs of the classroom.
- Relationship Building:
- Cultivate positive relationships with children, teachers, families, and the community based on trust, respect, and effective communication.
- Actively engage with children through one-on-one interactions, supporting their individual needs.
- Professional Development:
- The Assistant Teacher may work in collaboration with the Lead Teacher/Program Director to develop an annual professional growth plan aimed at advancing toward becoming an Associate Teacher.
- Take initiative in on-going learning opportunities that build knowledge around the Reggio-Emilia approach.
- Documentation and Assessment:
- Assist teachers in collecting and analyzing documentation to gain a deeper understanding of children's learning and inform instructional practices.
- Ensure that children's work is valued and their learning is visible to all stakeholders.
- Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure the classroom's compliance with all relevant regulations and maintain a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma required. Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) or associates degree in early childhood education preferred.
- An informed interest in the Reggio Emilia philosophy and a willingness to attend Reggio Emilia training and professional development.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A passion for fostering holistic child development, inquiry-driven learning, and inclusivity.
- A strong understanding of Michigan Child Care Licensing requirements.

Pay Range: $18-$22/hr.
Hours: Maximum 28 hours/week
Variable hours but generally Mon.-Fri. 7:30am – 5:30pm
