Job Summary: The Student and Family Engagement Specialist provides coaching and support through a continuous improvement process to develop and implement a multi-tiered system of support to ensure all students achieve academic and social-emotional success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Demonstrate and carry the vision of the commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all practices
- Consults and collaborates with administrators, teachers, staff, families, and others to assist students in achieving academic and social-emotional success
- Utilize a variety of researched-based techniques, strategies, and methods in supporting the whole child
- Provide building-level support for instruction and integration of the social-emotional competencies within the multi-tiered systems of support framework
- Coaching through the lens of 21st Century learning skills: critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration to learn and lead with confidence
- Provide individual and/or group coaching on all tiers of instructions (beginning with Tier 1) to classroom teachers and interventionists, including all components of the instructional coaching cycle: Pre-Conference, Gather Data (in classroom support), and Debrief
- Coordinate the implementation of the data review process: three benchmark assessments and midpoint check-ins
- Assist grade level teams in goal setting after each benchmark period and provide follow-up support through the use of Professional Learning Communities
- Assists building staff with behavior intervention strategies and implementation of positive behavior supports throughout the building
- Assist school leadership teams in identifying barriers and designing solutions to increase opportunities for family engagement
- Leverage student support systems to ensure that students’ social, emotional, academic, nutritional, and health needs are addressed
- Serves as an MTSS Building Coordinator specializing in the school multi-tiered systems (MTSS) review and implementation for Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Positive Behavior Supports (PBIS) while attending and disseminating information from District MTSS Meetings
- Collaborates with building principal, building literacy coach, and leadership team through the continuous improvement process
- Coordinates 504 programs and services
- Adheres to the District’s and School’s policies, expectations, and protocols
- Performs other related duties as assigned or directed
- Regular and consistent attendance.
- Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools Handbook.
Qualifications:
- Valid Michigan Elementary teaching certificate with 3-5 years of successful teaching experience OR Valid Professional License (such as School Psychologist or School Social Worker) with 3 to 5 years’ experience.
- Experience working with Professional Learning Communities, with proven collaboration and team-building skills
- Ability to collaboratively create and execute clear, logical plans that produce strong results
- Strong record of helping students achieve and sustain academic success
- Commitment to the belief that all students can learn, and to the mission of educational equity
- Ability to use data in the decision-making process, and strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to continuously elevate professional contributions through ongoing reflection, building upon previous learning, and being open and receptive to ongoing feedback
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
