To supervise the operational activities of clinical services within the Histocompatibility Laboratory section in the Department of Pathology.
Operational oversight:
- Provide day-to-day administrative supervision of qualified personnel performing testing and reporting high complexity test results.
- Schedule employees to provide adequate and equitable staffing in all areas.
- Supervise and coordinate daily operational lab activities, working closely with senior technologists to implement laboratory practices and procedures.
- Monitor and amend workflow to achieve maximum productivity and quality.
- Serve as a resource for technical and procedural problems from staff and outside institutions.
- Implement new and revised policies and procedures in the laboratory framework.
- Establish an atmosphere that satisfies employees physical needs and safety.
QC/QA/Compliance
- Responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
- Assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Coordinate, Implement and participate in monitoring the laboratory Quality Assurance Program.
- Assists with compliance of regulatory agency (CLIA, CAP, ACHI) rules and regulations.
Orientation/Training/Competency
- Provides or coordinates orientation to lab and department policies to all testing personnel.
- Review and approve training checklists. Oversee and evaluate training of all personnel performing laboratory testing. Verifies staff are trained and competent prior to performing testing on patient specimens independently.
- Oversee performance competency documents of testing personnel.
Personnel
- Develop performance objectives for each employee and conduct formal reviews at least annually. Evaluate employee skills and assess educational and training needs routinely.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback. Participate in the resolution of employee complaints. Counsel, coach and discipline as necessary.
- Enforce attendance policy and approve payroll for direct reports.
- Approve Vacation, trades and comp-time.

Management
- Work in cooperation with the management team to optimize workflow within the laboratory.
- Actively participate in setting goals and objectives for the laboratory.
- Take an active part in creating laboratory policy, organizational decisions, selecting candidates, introducing new procedures, and selecting new instruments.
- Work with HLA director and Administrative Manager to evaluate and recommend changes to the lab including equipment, supplies, and staffing.
- Keep Administrative Manager informed of problems or changes in procedures that impact the section or shift
Perform Testing
- Maintain expertise and competency in both serology and molecular areas of the laboratory to ensure adequate performance of staff and to provide assistance in the event of short staffing situations.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in on-call during off hours for both primary and secondary virtual crossmatch reviews, when needed.
- Actively participate in the validation process of new assays and equipment.
- Assist in performing cost analysis for new methodologies.
- Act as the point of contact during ASHI and CAP inspections.

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.
- Bachelor's degree in medical technology or biological science which is directly related to the duties of the position, as well as certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience in a clinical laboratory relative to the title.
- Demonstrated leadership experience of professional and support staff in a CLIA Clinical Lab setting.
- The preferred candidate would be competent in both serological and molecular testing as it relates to histocompatibility and immunogenetics.

This full time, 40 hour position is a minimum of 40 hours a week (100%), and may require additional time to accomplish duties, projects, meetings and emergent situations. This position is on the day shift and will require rotating weekends, holidays and on-call.
