Description

This position is responsible for all aspects of campus safety, security, Clery compliance, and student conduct.
Examples of Duties
- Provides leadership and guidance related to college security operations; schedules and manages the contracted officers and building monitors, ensures they are properly trained and equipped to respond to all incidents on campus; serves as their backup when necessary
- Ensures incident reports are completed and filed; maintains the daily crime log for public inspection
- Supervises and documents required monthly inspections of fire extinguishers, AED machines, eye-wash stations, and first aid stations/kits
- Responsible for all governmentally required safety compliance such as Clery and VAWA acts; serves as the Clery Compliance Officer; responsible for crime statistics compilation and reporting, prepares and submits the College’s Annual Security Report. Keeps updated on pending and current Clery Act Regulations and other federal or state compliance laws.
- Maintains an accurate and current list of buildings, properties, and locations owned or controlled by the College; updates College Clery Geography Maps and Building Narratives
- Ensures compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act and associated regulations; responsible for drafting and publishing the Biennial Review to comply with the Drug-Free Schools and Campuses Regulation (EDGAR Part 86)
- Serves as the chair for Mid’s Core Crisis Team and leads the college’s emergency management function
- Develops and maintains robust working relationships with state, county, and local agencies such as police, fire department, emergency services, and other first responders; Regularly reviews and updates the College’s emergency operations plan (EOP). Tests Mid’s emergency alert systems (EAS) in collaboration with the Strategic Communications and IT departments
- Ensures College faculty, staff, and students are properly trained and prepared to respond to emergency events by designing, coordinating, and scheduling regular training exercises, drills, table-tops, walkthroughs, virtual/module training, and other desired and/or required safety and security training initiatives
- Ensures College awareness and compliance with all applicable workplace safety regulations enforced by Federal, State, and Local Laws (OSHA, MIOSHA, etc.); Facilitates college-wide and department specific safety programs, initiatives, and inspections such as fire inspections, hazardous waste removal, etc.; Assists with maintaining the master safety data sheets (SDS) for the college in collaboration with the custodial manager
- Represents MID on the Michigan Community College Safety, Security, and Emergency Management Association (MCC-SEMA) and at local school safety and emergency management meetings
- Works with Human Resources department to identify and train persons determined to be Campus Security Authorities/Responsible Employees.
- Responsible for handling student conduct issues, complaints, and investigations. Convenes Mid Cares Team as needed
- Maintains and updates the College’s Safety and Security webpage
- Acts as the budget manager for the Campus Safety Department
- Research grant opportunities for funding and assists in grant writing to procure safety and security related grants
- Per the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), a federal consumer protection law, your job position entails functions that meet the definition of a Campus Security Authority (CSA).CSAs have a duty to report any crime to the College’s Clery Compliance Officer. This information may be disclosed to them directly, through third-party, or witnessed. As a CSA, you are required to complete annual training which is provided by the College. This training encompasses your role, responsibilities, and reporting obligations

Typical Qualifications
Education, Certification, Licensure:
- BA/BS degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Emergency Management, or related field or Associates Degree with relevant experience required
- OSHA 30-Hour training certification or MIOSHA Level 1 and 2 certifications (or required to obtain within 1 year of hire)
- CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification (or required to obtain within 6 months of hire)
Experience:
- 3 years of experience in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Emergency Management, or related field required
- Supervision/Management experience required
- Knowledge of/experience with the Clery Act, preferred
Supplemental Information

- Proficient in the principles and practices of safety, security, and emergency management
- Demonstrated effective skills in writing, listening, time management, and interpersonal communication
- Analytical ability to identify and resolve a variety of issues or challenges in an effective and timely manner
