Job description
Contribute to Ford teams highly engaged in all aspects of automotive materials research, development, and implementation including batteries, catalysts, paint, magnets, etc. Apply advanced X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) methods to automotive materials to determine elemental composition and structure. Work closely with other X-Ray Lab specialists, chemists, chemical engineers, material scientists, and mechanical engineers. Deliver X-Ray analyses to Ford teams in Research, Product Development, and Manufacturing. Activities could include pre-program as well as production samples. Work may include time bound analysis of warranty returns, manufacturing issues, supplier parts, and other corporate support activities.
Qualifications
Candidate must possess a background in materials characterization with an emphasis on XRF and XRD. A successful candidate must possess the ability to follow standard operating procedures and sample preparation methods, especially for XRF. Minimum requirements include a B.S degree in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering or similar with 3 years of material characterization experience. Preferred requirements include a master’s degree in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or similar with 2 years of material characterization experience. Applicable material characterization experience should include X-ray scattering and fluorescence methods including elemental compositional analysis using WDXRF, EDXRF, mapping XRF, and general powder XRD. Environmental XRD (high temperature under controlled gas exposure) and in-operando studies are a plus. A wide range of material analysis experience is also desirable for corporate support activities. The successful applicant will display excellent written and verbal communications skills and contribute to preparing reports and presenting results to coworkers and management.
Responsibilities
Operation and basic maintenance of Malvern Panalytical Zetium WDXRF for 12-24 months (estimated). Manufacturer training will be provided. Support of other XRF and XRD analyses as needed. Work 5 days per week M-F at the Ford Research & Innovation Center in Dearborn, MI. The facility includes Empyrean XRD with a wide range of stages and capabilities, Zetium WDXRF, Miniflex XRD, handheld EDXRF instrument, and mapping XRF system. BET and Hg porosimetry testing. General operation of gas reactors and some data analysis.
