Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Education Director, serve as a strong critical link between students, parents and teachers to provide individual and group counseling services to students. Collaborate with staff in the planning of cultural interventions, educational interventions, curriculum, and behavioral management plans. Utilizing knowledge of Native American intergenerational trauma will provide cultural insight and information about how students succeed and promote an environment of healing and empowerment for the students and their families. All education staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws. This is a grant funded position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide support and collaboratively work with the Project AWARE and Educational Team (SCA staff, students, families, community members and other Tribal Departments) to achieve academic goals.
- Select counseling, consulting or referral interventions appropriate to Anishinaabek students.
- Use small group, large group and individual techniques that are appropriate to the topic and to student`s needs.
- Select and assist in implementation of school wide programs and activities that meet identified school goals.
- Conduct home visits when necessary.
- Schedule school wide classroom presentations.
- Participate and lead professional development activities.
- Assist and lead school wide positive behavioral management program.
- Assist and lead parent involvement activities that facilitate trust and interaction with SCA.
- Assist with all school wide academic assessments.
- Collect school wide data and participate in the MTSS (Multi-tiered System of Support) process.
- Collect and report data to SCIT Project AWARE Facilitator.
- Provide or facilitate for staff, information about Anishinaabe culture and strategies to engage students in the learning process.
- Provide or facilitate for staff, information about Historical Trauma and how it affects learning, behavior and family involvement.
- Meet with parents and guardians to ensure they understand their rights and responsibilities to affect positive learning behaviors.
- Adhere to client confidentiality and comply with department policies and federal regulations under the Privacy rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
- Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:
- The school`s counseling position is empowered to interact with the Project AWARE Team, students in a counseling/classroom situation. Has frequent contact with parents and families, volunteers both at school and at home. This position also interacts with all academy faculty and staff and other associates as well as other tribal services and departments when deemed necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor`s degree in Social Work or Counseling from an accredited program.
- One year experience in mental health services working with children and families of children with severe emotional disturbances.
- Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.
Desired Qualifications:
- Three years working in a culturally diverse community.
- Experience working in an educational setting.
License, Certification, or Special Requirements:
- Obtain HIPAA certification within five business days of hire.
- Must have a valid State of Michigan Driver`s License with the proper designation required for the vehicle utilized to perform the job duties; must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver`s License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
- Must obtain a current and valid Chauffer’s License within 90 days of hire.
- Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
Physical Demands:
- Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
- Required to sit for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally walk, stand, bend and stoop.
- Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
Work Environment:
- Normal office or school environment.
- High stress level as associated with the demands of crisis interventions and emergencies is encountered as a result of challenges in the behavioral health field.
- Mandated reporting of abuse and neglect can lead to personal challenges with exposure to victims of abuse.
- High incidence of exposure to communicable diseases and blood borne pathogens.
- Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
- Travel may be required.
