Accounting Assistant

Duties:

• Supports accurate accounting for the Berrien County Trial Court by preparing vouchers, invoices, receipts, deposits, and financial reports.
• Performs moderately complex bookkeeping, maintaining ledgers, journals, and other financial records.
• Processes checks, trial balances, and bookkeeping documents, classifying and posting expenditures and revenues.
• Enters data into the accounting system and reconciles various accounts and ledgers.
• Prepares detailed financial reports in compliance with schedules, federal and state laws, or as requested.
• Manages Bond and Trust Accounts for cash bonds and trust funds, balancing receipts and disbursements daily and monthly.
• Maintains daily records of funds received, verifies document accuracy, and balances assigned cash drawers.
• Communicates with Trial Court customers and government agencies to provide information and assists auditors with accounting inquiries.
• Performs office clerical duties including phone support, greeting visitors, and preparing correspondence and reports.

Education and Experience:

• Associate degree in accounting, finance, or related field and one year of accounting or finance experience; OR
• High school diploma or equivalent and three years of accounting or finance experience.
• Coursework or experience in governmental accounting or finance is desired.

Special Requirements:

• Must possess and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license throughout the course of employment.
• Will be required to successfully pass a pre-employment physical, including drug testing prior to employment.
• A background check will be performed, and employees will be fingerprinted.
• Subject to random alcohol and drug testing.
• May be assigned to work at any of the Berrien County Trial Court locations.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

• Proficient in the use of computers and accounting software.
• Able to handle confidential documents with discretion.
