MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate FOC Attorney- Graduation from law school -AND- member in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan;
-OR-
Lead FOC Attorney- Graduation from law school -AND- member in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan -AND- one (1) year of experience in the practice of law after admittance to the bar;
-OR-
Senior FOC Attorney- Graduation from law school -AND- member in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan -AND- two (2) years' experience in the practice of law after admittance to the bar.

JOB SUMMARY: Performs highly responsible legal duties representing the Friend of the Court; maintains a current understanding of the law in the area of domestic practice, including the Michigan Child Support Guidelines and appellate decisions, makes recommendations to Judges and Attorney Referees relative to disposition of cases; represents the department in court proceedings; works under the supervision of the Deputy Director of the Friend of the Court, coordinates the activities of staff as may be required; performs related duties as may be assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:
- Answers questions and conducts research during and after court hours regarding related court matters.
- Represents the Friend of the Court at court hearings, including arraignments, show cause hearings and trials.
- Issues subpoenas.
- Conducts legal research and prepares legal briefs.
- Advises non-attorney staff on legal issues related to matters that come to the Friend of the Court.
- Takes depositions and prepares discovery.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the law as it relates to Friend of the Court activities.
- Extensive knowledge of available community and social resources.
- Ability to communicate with people under stress.
- Ability to cope with difficult problems.
- Ability to use good judgment, tactfulness and to utilize available resources.
- Ability to interpret the law and to apply it to individual cases.
- Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and respectfully in a complex, multicultural work environment that values diversity, equity and inclusion.
Notice: It is the policy of the Genesee County Friend of the Court to encourage career service by FOC attorneys. The salary schedule shall be implemented so that an employee hired as an Associate FOC Attorney will be advanced to Lead FOC Attorney after having successfully completed one (1) year of service. A Lead FOC Attorney will be advanced to Senior FOC Attorney after having successfully completed one (1) year of service as Lead FOC Attorney. Positions are exempt from overtime.
