REQUIREMENTS
- Successful completion of an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program, which generally involves two years in a specialized college program and one year of general college education and shall meet any current legal requirements of licensure.
Abilities:
- Physical abilities sufficient to lift equipment, transfer patients and reposition patients, as well as ability to stand and walk on a continuous basis throughout the workday.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively with a diverse group of staff and patients.
- Documentation skills necessary to write clear and concise reports of patients' progress and responses to treatments.
- Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit/department's policies and procedures.

SUMMARY
- Carries out and modifies as necessary, physical therapy treatment programs developed by and under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. These treatments include non-complex active and passive therapeutic exercise, supervision of and assistance to patients on exercise equipment, modality treatments, therapeutic soft tissue mobilization and functional mobility activities.
- Documents patient's status regarding physical therapy in medical record following established policies and procedures.
- Communicates with supervising physical therapist verbally or in writing regarding patient's progress, problems or changes made in Physical Therapy program.
- Instructs patients' families in selected exercises and safety techniques for functional activities.
- Develops home exercise programs for patients prior to discharge under the supervision of a physical therapist.
- Provides verbal or written justification for Physical Therapy services as requested by third party payers, formulating letters of reconsideration when necessary and appropriate, under supervision of a licensed physical therapist.
- Serves as representative for Physical Therapy Department at Skilled Nursing facility interdisciplinary conferences regarding patient status and programs.
- Provides supervision on a treatment level for Physical Therapist Assistant students. This involves clinical teaching, supervision and on-going evaluation of student performance with communication to the Center Coordinator of Clinical Education for Physical Therapy.
