ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Army JROTC Instructors manage the educational, administrative, and operational aspects of the unit and implement policies and procedures administered by the school and the U.S. Army. The SAI is the department head and chief instructor of the JROTC unit. The senior instructor will work in coordination with school officials to establish procedures relating to the administration, control, and training of JROTC Cadets.
- Must have regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
- Develop and deliver the JROTC curriculum in alignment with [Branch] JROTC program guidelines.
- Teach leadership, citizenship, military history, physical fitness, and character development courses.
- Lead and supervise cadets in drills, ceremonies, and extracurricular activities such as color guard, marksmanship, and competitions.
- Mentor students to develop their leadership potential and encourage participation in JROTC events and activities.
- Maintain student records, grades, and attendance in compliance with school and military requirements.
- Plan and oversee JROTC events, field trips, and community service projects.
- Ensure adherence to school and military policies regarding JROTC operations.
- Manage JROTC equipment, uniforms, and supply inventories.
- To promote the program, foster relationships with school administration, parents, and community organizations.
- Ensures a cross-section membership on the Advisory Committee; implements curriculum development and equipment selection through the Advisory Committee structure and established curriculum standards
- Maintains regular contact with the Work Based Learning Coordinators about specific job requests as well as the general employability of students
- Participates in Program Annual Review related to program and quality improvement and procedures (We call this the PAR report your instructor will complete as part of the renewal process.)
- Participate collaboratively with peers and in cooperation with their administrators, in planning and evaluating the instructional program of the building to assure equitable learning opportunities and quality learning for all students.
- Represent the Adrian Public Schools in an affirmative manner in the community.
- Other responsibilities as may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises classroom and students and volunteers.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelors degree.
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate for Secondary Level with applicable Vocational Authorization in the occupational area or eligible for Annual Career Authorization for up to 10 years.
- Instructors must participate in and complete the 5-step instructor-training plan and professional development at the JROTC School of Cadet Command (JSOCC). Completing the 5-step instructor-training plan is required for initial certification and continued certification for JROTC Instructors. See the 5-step training plan below. 13 • JROTC Basic Certification: Phase 1 - Distance Learning Course (Completion within 6 months of hire) Phase 2 - Resident Course (Completion within 12 months of hire) • Continual Learning Education Course (Completion within 2 years of hire) • Brigade Training Workshop (Completion once every 3 years) • Resident Advanced Recertification Course (Completion every 5 years of hire).
- Only Active Duty, Active Guard Reserve, and Army Reserve retirees can be instructors in Army JROTC units. USACC will determine the applicant’s eligibility, suitability, and qualifications through a satisfactory interview, physical examination, service record, application packet review, and other materials to serve as Army JROTC Instructors.
- Retired or honorably discharged military officer (Commissioned or Non-Commissioned Officer) meeting JROTC instructor certification requirements.
- Eligible for certification through Army JROTC headquarters.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience working with high school students or in an educational setting preferred.
- Ability to pass a background check and meet school district hiring standards.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience as a JROTC instructor in a high school setting.
- Experience coordinating JROTC extracurricular activities, such as drill competitions, summer camps, and leadership training.
- Ability to inspire, mentor, and develop students into confident leaders.
BACKGROUND CHECKS:
All applicants are required to have a background check upon initial hire. USACC vets all instructors by DoDI 1402.05 (Background Checks on Individuals in DoD Child Care Services Programs) and Army Directive 2014-23 (Conduct of Screening and Background Checks For Individuals Who Have Regular Contact With Children in Army Programs) with a Child Care National Agency Check and Inquiries (CNACI) background investigation and periodic re-verification every 5 years. All JROTC Instructors must have a complete comprehensive CNACI investigation and be found suitable to remain a JROTC Instructor. Instructors who are found unsuitable are removed from the JROTC classroom.
Must also complete fingerprint requirements per Michigan Department of Education.
