The Chippewa County Road Commission has an immediate opening for an experienced Heavy Diesel Mechanic to join their team in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Are you mechanically inclined and skilled at maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing equipment to keep trucks and machinery operating safely? Do you enjoy a mix of shop work and field service? If so, this could be a great fit for you. We provide a fully equipped service vehicle, along with the necessary tools and equipment to get the job done. We’re looking for a self-motivated technician who can work safely and efficiently to meet goals and deadlines. Being a team player is essential, as you’ll be working closely with others in a collaborative environment. This position reports to the Chief Mechanic, based at our Sault Ste. Marie facility.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.
- Perform all levels of diagnostic testing/troubleshooting on modern diesel engines & hydraulic systems.
- Carry out critical repairs and adjustments to chassis, engines, hydraulic systems, emissions controls, and electrical components on maintenance vehicles.
- Inspect, adjust, and verify repairs on parts, components, and systems for various heavy equipment and specialized mobile attachments.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with staff on repairs.
- Be available to work reasonable overtime when needed due to workload demands, including responding to after-hours service calls.
- Work outdoors in all types of weather, including extreme conditions, as required by the job.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.
- Must have 3 years heavy equipment/truck experience, or a relevant degree from a college or trade school.
- Minimum of a Class B Michigan Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.
- Able to demonstrate understanding and ability to troubleshoot/repair modern diesel emission systems (EGR, DPF, SCR).
- Able to demonstrate experience with modern diesel engine diagnostic equipment and software.
- Physically capable of lifting 100+ lbs. with assistance.
- Skilled in the use and operation of a Digital Volt Ohm Meter (DVOM).
- Experience with troubleshooting and repair of Allison automatic transmissions is preferred.
- Knowledge of load-sensing hydraulics, air-over-hydraulic controls, pilot controls, and electric-over-hydraulic systems is a plus.
- Welding and fabrication abilities are preferred.
