Music Therapist
Job Summary:
The music therapist is responsible for planning and implementing group music therapy for students in the school setting. The music therapist works as needed with the IEP team to develop appropriate goals and objectives for students who require direct music therapy to benefit from special education. However, the primary role is to provide group services using a musical approach to non-music skills in the curriculum.
Essential Duties (May include, but not limited to):
1. Prepares lesson plans that are aligned with the school curriculum. Develops, selects, and differentiates plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.
2. Selects musical material with sensitivity and knowledge of students’ diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
3. Adapts and selects musical material to ensure equity and inclusiveness for all students.
4. Provides music therapy to individuals and groups of students.
5. Selects, maintains and recommends musical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
6. Develops and coordinates special student performances, programs, and school/classroom events.
7. Collaborates with other disciplines to meet the sensory, motor, communication, and diverse needs of students.
8. Provides consultation to staff, parents, guardians, and others regarding music therapy services.
9. Assesses students’ achievement and develops music strategies to meet educational needs.
10. Reports progress and keeps data on student growth.
11. Participates in Individualized Education Program Team (IEPT) meetings and prepares draft/proposed IEP goals and objectives based on individual student needs.
12. May be responsible for helping plan and implement behavior management procedures.
13. Works with principal and school staff to coordinate additional music enrichment opportunities such as assemblies for the student body or portions thereof.
14. Develops a variety of student performing groups such as rhythm ensembles, choral groups, etc. as appropriate for the student population.
15. May supervise music therapy practicum students and/or interns as assigned.
