Summary of Position: | • Assistant Professor - Music - Full time 9-month tenure-track position. • Although there is no music major program at Ferris State University, Instrumental Music at Ferris has a proud history of more than 115 years on campus and in the greater community surrounding Big Rapids, Michigan. • The primary responsibilities of this position include directing the University-Community Concert Band and the Jazz Band, and also assisting with the Athletic Bands. • Additional teaching responsibilities may include one or more of the following: Symphony Band, Beginning Class Piano, Music Fundamentals (pre-Music Theory), and/or Music Appreciation-type course(s). • Courses are to be taught in person on one of Ferris State University's Campuses. The candidate(s) selected for the position must reside in Michigan after acceptance of employment • The start date for this position is August 2025. | |

Required Work Experience: | • Demonstrated successful experience as a high school, college, or university instrumental music teacher with experience in directing Concert Band, Jazz Band and Athletic Bands. • The successful candidate must demonstrate the potential for teaching excellence and strong interpersonal and communication skills, allowing them to work effectively with a diverse array of students and colleagues. | |

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: | • Preferred terminal degree in Instrumental Music with specialization in Concert Band and/or Jazz Band. • Experience working with college students in a non-music-major setting. • Experience working with Community Member musicians. | |
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: | • The primary responsibilities of this position include conducting the University - Community Concert Band, the Jazz Band, and also assisting with the Athletic Bands. • Additional teaching responsibilities may include one or more of the following: Symphony Band, Beginning Class Piano, Music Fundamentals (pre-Music Theory), and/or Music Appreciation-type course(s). • Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. • Support, promote, and develop university student enrollment and retention initiatives. • Faculty members also have professional responsibilities which include; advising students, orientation, registration of students, participation in university committees, keeping regular posted office hours (which are scheduled at times convenient for students), and participation in traditional functions which have academic significance, (i.e. reporting initial student participation data and submitting final grades on time). • Faculty members may be required to teach off-campus or in an on-line environment. • Any other duties assigned within the position classification area. | |
