Summary: Grand Valley State University's Department of English invites applications for a visiting faculty position, specializing in American Literature to begin August 6, 2025. We are seeking innovative educators who are flexible and able to teach a variety of undergraduate coursework. The position is for one year beginning in August 2025 with the potential for renewal for up to three years.
We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups, and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations.
Required Qualifications and Education:
• Candidates must have a Ph.D., or be near completion, in English or a related field with a focus on American Literature
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
• Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching
• Demonstrated excellence in college-level teaching
• Evidence of independently designed and taught courses
• ABDs in English or PhD/ABD in Comparative Literature or Ethnic Studies with focus on literary studies also considered. (Please note that due to HLC requirements, candidates from non-English fields must be able to demonstrate that they have coursework in literary studies at the MA level at minimum.)
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will specialize in a broad range of American literature, with the ability to teach introductory and upper-level courses. They may also teach sections of the department's Foundations courses (ENG 215 and 216), our general education Introduction to Literature course (ENG 105), as well as other courses as determined by departmental need and the candidate's expertise. The position has a 4/4 teaching load with no service or research requirements. Some support for research/professional development activities may be available depending on department budget.

Although the English Department does offer a few of our classes as online hybrid, this position requires relocation to the area. Courses will be taught in person on our Allendale campus, equidistant between Grand Rapids and the West Michigan lakeshore area, or, very occasionally, on our campus in downtown Grand Rapids.
Salary/Benefits:
The salary is $50,000.
