Summary: The Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is seeking applications for a full-time, visiting faculty position in trombone to begin in August 2025. This is a non-tenure track, one-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 years. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups, and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations.
Required Qualifications and Education:
• High level of artistry on trombone.
• Graduate degree in trombone performance.
• Demonstrated potential to recruit trombone students.
• Experience in, demonstrated understanding of, or interest in social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
• Experience teaching small and large jazz ensembles.
Responsibilities:
Duties each year include a 24-credit hour teaching load. Primary duties will include the teaching and mentoring of university level trombone students with additional teaching in the core music curriculum. Positive consideration will be given to applicants that are able to teach large and small jazz ensembles. The teaching assignment will be dependent upon the successful candidate's qualifications and interests, and the needs of the department.
Salary/Benefits:
The salary is $50,000. The Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance provides an intensive performing arts education within a liberal education. Our six degree programs are offered by 37 full-time faculty with over 150 performances by faculty, guest artists, and students each year. The department is located on the Allendale campus in the Haas Center for the Performing Arts.
