Global Teaching and Learning Specialist
Position Summary
The Global Teaching and Learning Specialist is situated within the Center for Global Learning and Innovation, a multi-faceted unit of International Studies and Programs that, among other related units, includes the Office for Education Abroad as a core component. The Global Teaching and Learning Specialist reports to and works closely with the Assistant Dean for Global Learning and Innovation and the Associate Director to advance a culture of global learning at MSU while realizing goals related to MSU’s commitment to and evolving framework for global learning. The Global Teaching and Learning Specialist will develop and provide leadership for Teaching, Learning and Scholarship (TLS), a special section of the Center for Global Learning and Innovation that is concerned with building faculty and staff capacity for engaging with global teaching methodologies, such as Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), inclusive pedagogy, and global intercultural pedagogy, the use of education technology in supporting global learning, engaging in global learning and teaching, research, as well as the incorporation of global perspectives into existing courses and traditional curriculum. This position also facilitates synergies across the Center for Global Learning and Innovation in support of global learning. Key responsibilities include leading the MSU COIL Faculty Fellows program, coordinating an annual series of faculty and staff development workshops on global teaching and learning topics and strategies, building campus capacity for the use of educational technology to support global learning, consulting with instructors about their individual courses, and developing and maintaining resources for MSU community members engaging in research on global learning. This position serves as the Center for Global Learning and Innovation’s liaison to the MSU Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI). This position also supervises the Student Success Coordinator, providing guidance for activities and reports that connect student engagement with global learning to student success outcomes. The Global Teaching and Learning Specialist additionally provides curricular advice to members of the Center for Global Learning and Innovation on projects related to global youth development of global citizenship skills and competencies.
International Studies and Programs (ISP) is currently operating under a hybrid modality structure, with staff working three days in person and two days remote.
The following are the responsibilities of the Global Teaching and Learning Specialist:
Curriculum Development (40%)
- Develop and provide general leadership for the TLS section of the Center for Global Learning and Innovation.
- Support the alignment, and continuous improvement of, programs, courses, and activities with the Spartan Global Learning Framework, ISP framework’s pillar of creating global citizens, the Spartan Undergraduate Experience Strategy, and the global competencies of MSU undergraduate learning goals.
- Support the alignment of programs, courses, and activities with industry principles of global learning (e.g. AAC&U, NAFSA, ACE, The Forum on Education Abroad).
- Support the alignment of programs, courses, and activities with college missions, values, and strategic goals as well as associated accreditation standards.
- Inform the implementation of practices related to global education and student success through application of best practices, promising practices, and collaboration with experts in relevant fields.
- Collaborate with college stakeholders to identify curriculum needs and priorities, identify opportunities for improvement, and propose solutions.
- Participate in the development of certain instructional materials, as needed.
- Support the creation of documentation required for relevant curricular initiatives.
- Facilitate synergies across the Center for Global Learning and Innovation in support of global learning.
Faculty Development (40%)
- With the Associate Director and Senior Innovation Officer, coordinate an annual faculty development series of workshops and information session on global teaching and learning topics and strategies, including education abroad, informed by andragogy and best practices in faculty development.
- Consult with faculty individually, upon request, regarding the global teaching and learning techniques and utilization of resources.
- Provide university level leadership for increasing faculty and staff familiarity with the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) methodology.
- Lead the MSU COIL Faculty Fellows program; develop program structure and curriculum, deliver certain training modules, and source experts for some aspects of instruction.
- Recommend educational technology to enhance and increase the accessibility of global learning to faculty.
- Recommend assessment strategies for global learning, including experiential activities, to faculty.
- Develop and maintain TLS resources for MSU community members engaging in research on global learning; this may include undertaking literature reviews, compiling bibliographies, and assembling lists of journals and professional organizations.
Student Success (10%)
- Guide the Student Success Coordinator on activities and reports that connect student engagement with global learning to student success outcomes. Make these connections highly visible to faculty (relates to Faculty Development above) and the MSU community, including campus leaders.
- Guide the Student Success Coordinator and collaborate with colleges on the continual improvement of student evaluation processes for global learning (e.g. education abroad program participation surveys).
- Align TLS with the Spartan Undergraduate Experience Strategy (relates to Curriculum Development above).
- Participate in campus initiatives related to student success.
- Serve as a campus resource for mentoring students to develop global citizenship skills.
- Provide curricular advice to members of the Center for Global Learning and Innovation on projects related to global youth development of global citizenship skills and competencies.
Administration (10%)
- Promote and contribute to the efficient and effective functioning of the Center for Global Learning and Innovation to achieve unit goals and maintain administrative accountability.
- Supervise and provide mentorship to the Student Success Coordinator.
- Serve as the Center for Global Learning and Innovation’s liaison to the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI).
- Generate, analyze, and disseminate data relevant to the Center for Global Learning and Innovation, ISP, associated units, and colleges.
- Attend and, upon request, present at meetings of the Advisory Council on Education Abroad (ACEA).
- Assist with the onboarding of new employees of the Center for Global Learning and Innovation through the provision of basic training on global teaching and learning.
- Participate, as required by the Center for Global Learning and Innovation, in professional development activities, both on and off campus, including conferences, workshops, and seminars to enhance abilities and knowledge of global teaching and learning.
