The Baraga County Road Commission seeks Heavy Equipment/Road Maintenance Operators to join their team in L’Anse, Michigan. This position requires someone who enjoys being out in the field operating heavy-duty trucks and equipment including graders, front-end loaders, excavators, and dozers.

- $26.36 – $27.75 per hour starting pay based on your knowledge and experience.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.
- Operate heavy equipment (trucks of various sizes, weights and equipment), including loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies and perform summer and winter road maintenance and construction activities. Experience in winter road maintenance with plow trucks, operating front-end loaders, excavators, dozers, and graders are a bonus.
- Operate air compressors, hydraulic post pullers, post driving air hammers and air drills; use mechanics hand tools to install, repair, and replace pipes, posts, and signs along roads.
- Repair cracks, joints, seams and potholes in highways and bridges using shovels and other hand tools to pour sealant or to place prepared repair material.
- Assist mechanics with oil changes, lubrication and perform minor repairs to motorized equipment and vehicles used in maintenance.
- Clean, service and make repairs to equipment; change underbody scraper and grader blades.
- Blade roads, plow/scape snow, spread sand/salt on road surfaces, patch blacktop, load/haul road materials.
- Install and maintain traffic control signs/devices.
- Practice safe work and lifting procedures at all times including wearing personal protective equipment.
- Work in high traffic areas and in all types of weather conditions (hot, cold, humid, windy, rainy, snowy, icy, etc.).
- Lift, push and pull heavy objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.
- Experience operating heavy equipment used in road construction and maintenance.
- Valid driver’s license required; Class A CDL preferred, or ability to obtain Class A CDL upon being hired.
- Participate in training and be observant and safety-minded in the course of completing your work.
- Ability to collaborate with others as well as work independently while maintaining a positive attitude.
- Ability to work under time constraints to ensure deadlines are met.
- Ability to travel throughout Baraga County to worksites in a company provided vehicle.
- Flexibility to work outside of normal scheduled hours and/or respond to emergencies if needed.
- Ability to pass a physical and drug test (paid for by the Road Commission) required.
