Department Summary
This position exists within the Engineering Services Department and specifically Laboratory Services. The position is based in Jackson, MI. The individual in this position will be responsible for leading a variety of failure analysis and materials characterization projects. The individual shall have a metallurgical engineering background, as well as strong technical writing and verbal communication skills in order to accurately convey project findings to our customers. A thorough understanding of generating plant systems as well as of metallographic practices, scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical testing is preferred. Previous supervisory or management experience is a plus. Additionally, training and/or experience working within laboratory quality systems such as A2LA is preferred.
The department workload is entirely dependent upon customer demand, including time critical projects that require immediate attention, requiring out of town travel on short notice, and overtime as required. The individual will be assigned projects which are self-managed, and therefore must have the ability to work independently on multiple projects while containing project cost and delivering reports within the expected deadline.
This position is within Energy Resources but the work is performed across the company, including Generation, Energy Delivery & Operations and Fleet. In addition to supporting internal company projects, Laboratory Services also provides metallurgical services to customers outside the utility.
Job Description/Responsibilities
The General Engineer II independently performs assignments with instructions as to the general results expected. Receives technical guidance on unusual or advanced problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects. The General Engineer II must be fully competent in conventional aspects of the subject matter of the functional areas of the assignments; plan and conduct work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria; and be able to devise new approaches to problems encountered.
