The Michigan State Police (MSP) is seeking individuals dedicated to public service, integrity, and making a positive impact in their communities. As a Michigan State Trooper, you will perform a full range of law enforcement duties, including:
- Enforcing traffic laws and conducting criminal investigations.
- Patrolling assigned areas to ensure public safety.
- Providing assistance and services to the public.
Troopers are certified law enforcement officers by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and typically work from a State Police post.
Training & Employment Process
Recruits will be employed while undergoing training at the MSP Training Academy Recruit School, a residential law enforcement training program lasting approximately 24-26 weeks. During this period, recruits receive:
- A paid salary and health insurance benefits.
- Instruction in law enforcement procedures, physical training, and coursework necessary to function as a Michigan State Trooper.
Upon completion of recruit school, probationary troopers will be assigned to a State Police post and must successfully complete an 18-month probationary period to continue employment.
Preferred Post Assignment Process
- Candidates will submit their top three post location preferences upon receiving a conditional offer of employment.
- Assignments are determined based on agency personnel needs and candidate preference.
- Final post assignments will be detailed in the Appointment Letter upon academy graduation.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
Experience:
- No prior law enforcement experience required.
Examinations:
Candidates must:
- Pass the Frontline Entry-Level Law Enforcement Exam to qualify for the position.
- Pass the MCOLES Pre-Enrollment Physical Fitness Test after receiving a conditional offer of employment.
Additional Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be a United States citizen.
- Become a Michigan resident before graduating from the Academy.
- Be at least 21 years old by the time of recruit school graduation.
- Possess a valid Michigan driver's license by recruit school graduation.
- Maintain a satisfactory driving record.
- Undergo a comprehensive background investigation to determine suitability for law enforcement work.
- Refrain from marijuana use after submitting an application, as any use will result in a one-year deferment from the selection process.
