Dickinson Co Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatcher Job Overview:
We are currently seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Dispatcher to join our team. As a Dispatcher, you will play a crucial role in coordinating and dispatching emergency services, law enforcement, or medical personnel to various locations. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, the ability to analyze situations quickly, and the capacity to remain calm under pressure. Though we are not on scheduled swing shifts, all dispatchers are expected to work day and night shifts depending on their assigned schedule rotation.
Training consists of a 3-month hands-on approach at the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center. Training status is part-time, but may evolve into full-time employment at the completion of training. Occasional travel to continuing education training will be required over the course of the next 2 years. All training costs are paid by the Sheriff’s Office.
Part-time positions are paid at $17.85 per hour during training. Part-time positions are without full benefits.
Full-time positions start at $20.05 and top out at $24.09 with pay raises each year of employment. Full-time dispatchers are provided full benefits. The full-time position is a union employee position represented by the Police Officers Labor Council (POLC).
Responsibilities of a 911 Dispatcher:
- Receive emergency calls and gather essential information
- Dispatch appropriate personnel to the scene of emergencies or service requests
- Monitor and track the location of field units using GPS or GIS systems
- Communicate with emergency responders, law enforcement agencies, and medical professionals
- Transcribe and relay important information accurately and efficiently
- Analyze situations and make quick decisions regarding resource allocation
- Maintain accurate records of all calls, dispatches, and related activities
- Provide support to field personnel as needed
- Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and protocols
Skills:
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Proficient in data entry and record keeping
- Quick thinking and strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to analyze information quickly and make sound decisions
- Ability to multi-task under pressure
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle stressful situations effectively
- Knowledge of dispatching procedures and protocols is a plus
- Familiarity with GPS or GIS systems for tracking purposes is a plus
- Understanding of law enforcement or medical terminology is a plus
Once your resume is received, an online dispatch skills test will be emailed. The test link will be valid for 5 days & must be completed to move on to the next step in our hiring process.
The test may be retaken after 6 months for those who have previously taken it. Candidates will be interviewed and a background check completed. Successful candidates may be offered conditional employment with successful completion of the training period.
